Sebastian man who molested 12-year-old girl is sentenced to 90 years

VERO BEACH — A 60-year-old Sebastian man whose wife once ran a day
care center out of their home was sentenced Monday to 90 years in
prison for sexually molesting a 12-year-old girl.
Angel Luis Gonzalez, who also worked as a maintenance man at a
Sebastian area church, was given the maximum sentence of 30 years on
each of three counts of sexual battery. Circuit Judge Dan L. Vaughn
ordered the sentences to run consecutively and gave Gonzalez credit
for 509 days for time served.
The family of the girl, as well as another girl Gonzalez has been
charged with molesting, made a gesture of approval to Assistant State
Attorney Brian Workman after the sentence.
"I wanted to be sure he never got out, and that's a guarantee that he
will never be released from prison," said Workman, who said Gonzalez
is required to serve at least 85 percent of his sentence under state
law.
Although Gonzalez admitted at his March trial to placing his hand
inside the 12-year-old girl's shorts, he claimed at his sentencing
hearing Monday that he was innocent of the charges. Initially, he
stated he was guilty of the charges. He blamed his apparent verbal
slip Monday on having just had a cheese sandwich that made him sleepy.
At his March trial, in which a six-member Indian River County jury
found him guilty of the charges, Gonzalez blamed his behavior on a
"chemical imbalance" he attributed to not having consumed meat for
eight years.
Gonzalez was arrested by Sebastian police on Dec. 22, 2004, after the
girl told a Sebastian River Middle School resource officer she had
been touched inappropriately by Gonzalez earlier that year.
At his March trial, the girl testified Gonzalez touched her underneath
her clothing on three occasions, twice at his home and once at a
vacant house.
Gonzalez had contended at his trial he knew the girl since she was a
baby. He claimed there was only one instance of sexual abuse.
Workman, who spoke briefly with the victim's family after the
sentencing, said he thought the sentence was appropriate "given the
crime he committed and the danger that he represents."
Gonzalez still faces charges of lewd and lascivious molestation and
attempted lewd and lascivious molestation in regard to the incident
involving the other girl. Workman said a decision has not been made on
whether to go forward with that case in light of Monday's sentence.
The Department of Children and Family Services moved to shut down the
day care that Gonzalez's wife ran after the first girl came forward.
