Earth only is a videogame |
Some alien programmed it millions of years ago and made dinosaurs ,
mammals and then humans.
It played around with them a little bit, a few thousand years , but
got bored and threw away the videogame that is still running today.
Sometimes the alien comes back and causes some little natural
disasters or wars and watches the ant-like humans acting like they do.
So we should better kick the alienīs ***** and then we are our own
masters !

Oh it's far worse than that. Apparently the odds overwhelming favour
the proposition we and the universe are simulations.

That's actually quite fascinating, and as far as I can tell his
reasoning is sound. Note, however, that he does not claim that we are
necessarily in a simulation, but rather that one of the following is
true:
1) Virtually no civilizations of human-level intelligence survive long
enough to develop "post-human" technology (where that is technology that
allows a high number of simulations of this sort to be run).
2) Virtually no civilizations of human-level intelligence, who survive
long enough to develop "post-human" technology, have any significant
interest in running simulations of this sort.
3) We are almost certainly in a simulation of this sort.
As far as I can tell, he is correct. He makes one or two assumptions
that I hesitate to accept with full confidence, but they don't
particularly affect his conclusion. I find this fascinating, since I
see no reason to believe that societies such as ours would fail in large
numbers, nor do I miss the fact that human thinking would likely prompt
us to want to see such simulations, which leaves only the third option
-- a sobering consideration, even if you doubt the conclusion.
I see only one way around this. It may be that in order for a society
to survive to a "post-human" state, it must attain an average
psychological state that does not prompt interest in such simulations.
However, there really seems no evidence that this is true, which
suggests, to me at least, that I came up with this idea as a response to
my desire to see all three of the above propositions as false.
Obviously, that's not a good reason to come to a conclusion, so I have
to discount this idea as a significant possibility, and provisionally
accept that one of those three propositions is indeed true. Interesting
and a bit scary, isn't it?
Of course, there's also the other possibility, which is that there are
physical laws of the universe that make any computer that powerful
impossible.

this here is what happens when you subject young children to the fumes in

the solipsist take on this (altered to be sophisticated) theory is much more
suitable

Level 9, room 23, behind the secret panel which is activated by the button
on the left wall in the room at the end of the level. Yes, I know it means
trudging all the way back, but if you want the BFG....

Not quite.
They programmed it with a flat earth. Better computers later allowed them
to incorporate a spherical earth (v2). V3 was earth centric. V4 was helio
centric. V5 was galactic centric. V6 added other galaxies.
Minor variations and side stories told by other games, were incorporated
(rather poorly) into later additions.
I'm saving up to buy V7. (note: In Japan it's V12)
