There are reasons why all those engineers are coming out of India and
China-they believe, and rightly, it will get them jobs in the United
States!
American kids aren't quite as stupid as they look. They see forty year
old engineers, competent ones, reduced to what are in effect sales or
technician jobs, if they don't move up the ladder to "engineering
management" at their first or second employer.
Get rid of H-1B visa indentured servants, and put the kibosh on
runaway litigation-which your fundie foe Bususuru II is doing, albeit
the wrong way and for wrong reasons- and our engineer/attorney
disparity will largely right itself.

I think you've put the cart before the horse.
The H1 visa has been around a long time for all kinds of foreign workers
and for a while certain skills (IT) were given increased priority and
some extra visas - that's pretty much done with now.
The thing is, the H1 programme as a whole and the special programs are
there *because* there is not enough skill in the US as it was and is. To
put that another way, if not for some of the H1 visa immigrants, the USA
would not be able to meet the demand for some skill sets - largely
because being a lawyer is worth big bucks no matter how many there are.
You think that getting rid of the H1s = more demand in the US and
therefore more students taking those subjects - history has proven that
wrong. Without the H1 visa (or at least it's equivalent) there'd be no
NASA space program since the German's who made it then and the Europeans
who staff it today would not be here.

You're a fucking cancer, you pious *****. Already, the USA is falling behind
2nd world countries in most things technological, thanks to your ***** of a
superstitious religion that's being fast-tracked into places it doesn't
belong, and you have the gall to bleat, whinge and whine, blaming a
minority for the sorry state of the union. Here's wishing you a speedy
death, you *****.

But at least we have lawyers Creationists to lead the way!
China: over 1.2 billion people. 600000/1200000000=0.0005
India: about 1.0 billion people. 300000/1000000000=0.0003
USA: about 280 million people. 70000/280000000=0.00025
So the US is graduating about the same rate as India and half of China's
rate. The other countries still have a long ways to go to catch up in
gross numbers of existing engineers.

A significant percentage of engineers graduating from American schools
are Indian and Chinese, among other nationalities, particularly true in
graduate programs.

Except you need to factor in the foreign students obtaining PhDs at US
universities. Which was about 35% in 2003 (last year I can find data). So
you'd have to figure 24,500 US citizens for a rate of about 0.0001625...

And while some stay in this country, many go back. another factor is
outsourcing. Not only the manufacture, but even the design and
development of many of our consumer good is being sent overseas. Even in
science, R & D is also beginning to be outsourced. India, China, Japan,
and other places have excellent research facilities. Not only can they
carry out the work more cheaply, but they are not bound by the silly
anti-science restrictions of the current administration, e.g. Stem Cell
research.

Have you given a thought to the possibility that not only do China and
India have a "few" more people than the USA does which may explain the
difference between the numbers, but their educational standards may not
be the same as ours are either?
But at least we have lawyers Creationists to lead the way!

Have you ever thought that the United States produces more lawyers
than any other country?

Asia is now equal or outpacing the US in patents...

There is no shortage of skilled engineering talent in the United
States. There is a shortage of skilled young aggressive talent which is
desperate to get here and will work very long hours in insanely
expensive areas such as Silicon Valley for poor pay knowing full well
that most of them will only last a few years.
That few years will give them the contacts, language skills, and "lay
of the land" to establish themselves here and figure out how to
stay-often to marry a citizen and produce an anchor baby, at which time
their chances of being booted out are minimal.
American kids see that and realize it's a loaded deck. Attorneys on
the other hand can be, for all practical purposes, only educated in the
US (for US practice) and the more attorneys there are the more work
they generate for each other, at the general expense of society. When
the legislature is made up of large numbers of attorneys and the
executive branch staffed largely with attorneys, and the judicial
branch consisting of attorneys by definition, the fix is quite
obviously in.
Give the "rightards" credit where due-they, unlike Lefty and Libty,
understand full well runaway litigation needs to be stopped. People who
sue for product liability and lose should expect powerful deterrent in
the form of attorney fees. Unfortunately the primary cause of runaway
litigation is corporate rather than product liability or medical
malpractice, and the Bush regime won't touch that. Nor will they apply
the real, supply-side fix-make product liability insurance carry
non-financial costs, eliminate "confidential" out of court settlements,
and in general make manufacturers build defensible products and then
defend them correctly.
Derail the attorney gravy train. Throttle H-1B visa applications down
to a trickle, only for jobs genuinely unfillable by domestic talent
(i.e.,knowledge of truly arcane languages, or maintenance of foreign
capital equipment that is truly beyond non-factory personnel.)
