‘Gay’ Bush campaign chair to join openly gay chief financial officer
at helm of GOP

‘Gay’ Bush-Cheney campaign chair Ken Mehlman is all but certain to
become chairman of the Republican National Committee, a source close
to the White House told United Press International Sunday.
Mehlman, who has long been rumored to be gay and whose party put
pressure on two New York newspapers during the Republican National
Convention to kill stories questioning the single 37-year-old’s
sexuality, will succeed Ed Gillespie.
Two additional sources who had been in contact with blogACTIVE.com,
which outed Rep. Ed Schrock and Rep. David Dreier, retracted their
statements about Mehlman after saying they received calls from press
officers at the Party.
Mehlman will join two other top Republicans who are openly gay: the
Chief Financial Officer of the Republican Party Jay Banning, and the
party’s number two political director and National Field Director
Daniel Gurley.
Both confirmed that they were gay and refused to answer questions
about the party’s positions on gay marriage in telephone calls
published by RAW STORY in September.
Mr. Mehlman must be approved for the post by an RNC vote, which is
considered a mere formality once the president officially taps him for
the post.
He has strong ties to Bush adviser Karl Rove, the man President Bush
has called "the architect" of his Nov. 2 victory.
When asked if he was gay last week, Mehlman hung up the phone.
Deputy communications director Steve Schmidt, reached by telephone,
asserted that Mehlman was not gay but refused to say so on the record.
Banning, who is out at work, has been CFO for the Republican Party
since 1983.
While collecting nearly $300 million in the 2004 election cycle for
the most explicitly anti-gay platform the party has held in history,
said he has no problem with spending tens of millions of dollars to
restrict the rights of a group he’s part of.
"I don’t seem to have a problem with it," Banning said in September.
"I’m not in the policy area."
Queried further, he remarked, "I don’t make the policy."
Gurley, meanwhile, said he would not speak about anti-gay marriage
flyers the party admitted mailing in the South.
As National Field Director, he would have a hand in political
mailings.
He did, however, intimate that he might not agree with some of the
party’s tenets.
"I, like anyone else, have policy disagreements with any number of
elected officials," Gurley said.
"I don’t expect to agree with everything that everybody says."

As long as you're rich and/or powerful enough to buy sex (and pay off
blackmailers), who cares if young, poor gay men suffer? I mean,
feeling empathy for others would be a little too human for these
reptiles.
There are things more important than your sexuality when you have the
luxury to ignore it. Even as a poor student, I've had that luxury in
Massachusetts. Elsewhere ... nope, not really. I get hostile looks,
preached to, told I'll change, verbally harrassed (one supervisor
insisted on addressing me as "Miss" or using my full first name--he
was a Christian, what a surprise), trivialized, insistently hit on,
and forced to go into deep cover. (Incidently, I do very good work and
those who worked with me directly knew that and liked me--it was other
coworkers who gave me crap.) In Massachusetts I don't have to explain
myself or the way I dress or my interests, and I don't have to call my
girlfriend "this friend of mine". In short, I don't have the think
about it.
I'm sure if I were a wealthy ***** I wouldn't really have to care
about the lack of equal rights for gays in Virginia ... but I'm not.

I'm sure there are things more important than one's religion or race
as well, but I see no "Jews For Pat Buchanan" groups forming, nor do I
see the "African-American Committee To Elect David Duke"...

What principles might those be, Elf? And why are Republicans the
default opposition? That sounds way too close to the notion many
theists bring to the table here that the only alternatives are
Christianity or atheism.

Nah, they're probably very rich, white males, who are confident that,
whatever the laws passed by their party, they'll be able to buy their
way out of it.
I used to live with a stoner who voted Republican. He didn't like
Ashcroft, but being white and from an upper middle class family with a
father who was prominent in govt bureaucracy, he felt pretty much
immune from the law.
From what I've read, the set who started ACT-UP! were wealthy white
conservative gays who'd ignored the gay rights movement of the 70's
and were only now turning politically radical when their requests for
AIDS research funding went unheeded and they suddenly realized *they
could die*.
A gay man in the AFA or something similar is probably self-hating. A
gay man in the RNC is a selfish queen who figures that his money and
connections will protect him.
Bottom line, elites and rich fucks are hypocrites who pass laws they
don't expect to obey themselves. (Dubya getting tough on crack users
even though he did coke himself; his niece is put in rehab for a drug
offense while Ashcroft sends others to the Federal pokey ... heck, JFK
buying Cuban cigars right before declaring a trade embargo.)
