Election of the pope |
I watched a fairly good show on one of the "Educational" channels dealing
with how the pope is elected (today) and a bit of history of the popes.
A couple of Catholic priests commented frequently and I suspect most of the
others were also Catholic.
They painted a picture of the latest one doing far more good than evil but
did not back down on some of the less popular things.
By and large they painted a picture of a *very* political line where bribes
bought young popes and many were just plain evil.
They suggested that the pope is picked for the times. About the only
religious comment they made is that most Catholics believe the holy spirit
is involved.

Did they tell this hilarious story?
----
Bitter rivalries opened up on the death of Liberius in 366. No clear
election procedures were in force and two groups sponsored rival candidates,
Damasus and Ursinus for Pope. After much street-fighting, Ursinus'
supporters sought refuge in the recently completed basilica of St Mary
Major. Damasus' followers climbed to the roof, made an opening and hurled
stones and tiles on the occupants below. Meanwhile others attacked the main
door and forced it open. A bloody fight broke out, lasting three days and
ending in the slaughter of 137 men, all supporters of Ursinus. Damasus was
declared Pope while Ursinus was sent into exile by the Emperor.
Damasus found himself under constant threats from Ursinus' followers and
used gladiators to guard him. In 382 Pope Damasus went on to claim spiritual
primacy as a direct successor of Peter, the first Pope to do so. St Basil
(330-379) described him as 'impossibly arrogant'.

No, the story of them being forced to elect an Italian pope was brought up;
the period when there was first two, then three popes; and one of the crazy
ones was mentioned.
They talked about how everybody tends to get on board towards the end so
they can go home and mentioned it was not a good idea to have the new guy
mad at you.
They then mentioned the pope who dug up and excommunicated his predecessor.
They also mentioned the wars fought as they tried to maintain control of a
large part of what is now Italy and of Mussolini's making the present day
state a neutral nation.

If I may quibble, please don't dignify the process of 117 fascists
proclaiming a Supreme Leader of their authoritarian dictatorship by calling
it an "election".

What is it then?
While there is a bit more formality than most are used to these people use a
secret ballot to vote for someone and do so repeatedly until one name gets a
2/3 majority or until some lenght of time passes and he gets a simple
majority.
They do so freely and nobody has to belong to the club.

Nobody except for 0.0000002% of the world's population gets to belong to the
club.
But if 1.1 billion people are stupid enough to pledge fealty to 117 nazis in
red hats then that's just the way it is.

It seems so. It looks like the bookmakers think the best odds are on a
new Latino Pope. South American candidates are rated with the best odds
in general. That would stir the passions of the sizable South American
Catholic population.

On 08 Apr 2005, Mike Painter dropped trou, farted, whirled, then
shouted:

So *where* can I vote for the new pope? Is there a space for write-ins?

History channel ran a marathon of "Saints and Sinners", a great
history of the Papacy. Very interesting stuff.
