Later on, when I was in HS Eisenhower encouraged Congress to include
"Under God" into the Pledge. I thought at the time that nobody asked me
whether I objected. I was the one being asked to change the way I had
recited the pledge and no one had consulted with me. I reasoned at the
time that if Carmen could, with a legitimate interpretation of scripture,
feel the need to abstain from reciting the Pledge, then how in Heaven's
name could adding God's name to the Pledge sanction what the Government
had done by adding "under God" to the pledge, because of the Communist
scare.
I have since read the Sermon by which Eisenhower had been persuaded to
promote using "under God" in the Pledge. From my viewpoint it was the most
disgusting piece of atheist-directed hate-rhetoric that I have ever come
across that was delivered from a "religious" pulpit, or elsewhere. My
wife's father was an avowed atheist and a close friend I met at MIT was an
atheist. Neither of them deserve to be slandered in any manner whatsoever
because of their convictions. They are as much a citizen of this country
as anyone else. If it requires those who want to accept the "Christian"
label to walk an extra mile to go to their church to participate in their
religious faith, then I concur. You call Separation of Church and State a
Myth. I call it a sacred concept.
