"Yesterday, October 2nd, 2006, my son, Specialist Joseph W. Perry was
killed in the Al-Anbahr Province of Iraq. He had just had his 23rd
birthday. Joe was a senior in high school on 9/11. He had no idea what
to do with his life until that fateful day. He enlisted in the U.S. Army
right after 9/11 and left for Basic Training immediately after high school
graduation. On 5/16/06, he received the Bronze Star with Valor for
heroism in battle when he stepped into the line of fire to draw fire away
from his squad; no one was hurt that day. Joe was my only child, my pride
and joy, my hero."

Sincere condolences to your friend.
We too lost a friend to an IED in Iraq a few months back.
Outstanding young man, with a promising future in a family business.
However, he felt a calling to serve.
That said, I've never been as disgusted as when the loons from Fred Phelp's
Westboro Baptist church showed up to picket this young man's funeral.
Shouting epithets, carrying signs emblazened with obscenely obnoxious
pictures and slogans...well, you know the sort.
If any good came of this charade, it's that a number of people in attendance
came away believing that *all* fundamentalists, regardless of flavor, are
nuts.
Something most of us already know.

Sorry to hear about it, Enkidu. I am so ready for this ***** to be over.
I just found out my buddy doing satellite feeds over there quit his job
and is coming home. Seems the soldiers escorting his convoy hit an IED,

Very sorry to hear about your and your friend's loss.

I never met this young man, but it still brings tears to my eyes every
time I think of it. The loss of young men and women of this calibre,
those most willing to give to others, to sacrafice for others, is a high
price to pay for any cause.
Thousands of people have lost sons, daughters, husbands, friends, lovers,
fathers, mothers. And for what? The United States is no safer than before
September 11, 2001. We are less secure. The Iraqi people are no better
off than they were before this war. Tens of thousands are dead, each one
a vital part of a community, thousands more have been tortured, hundreds
of thousands have been wounded, maimed, crippled. Such sacrifices deserve
a better cause.
George W. Bush and his hateful and hate filled minions deserve the
business end of a war crimes trail. Perhaps an impeachment trial will be
the first step.

A lot of Iraqis have begun to wish for the "good old days" of Saddam, when
they were able to go to the market without fearing for their lives.

Don't hold your breath. Won't happen as long as the Republicans hold
Congress and probably not even if they lose it to the Dems next month. It
was the Dems that just a week and a half ago chose _not_ to filibuster one
of the worst bills to ever pass Congress, one that destroys habeas corpus
as well as our right to due process. Today, at least until it is
overturned by the courts (which will take months or years if it happens at
all), you or I or _anyone_, citizen or not, can be taken away and held
without charge indefinitely, on the say-so of the fool in the White House.
And that's what this poor kid died for, when he thought and was told he
was fighting for the safety and freedom of the folks back home.

Regardless of the validity of this war, regardless of why this young man
enlisted, he stepped up to the plate to serve his country and made the
ultimate sacrifice. Let's reserve our criticisms of the politicians

If one believes something that is wrong, whether they spent years researching

Maybe I'm too emotional about this but I think it does not serve to honor the

Denying it, pretending it isn't so to save the feelings of those who mourn
him, _that_ is what does him a disservice! Honor his memory by putting
the people who lied to him behind bars!
Or at least by kicking them out of office!

Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.
