Object: End of life - They are letting my grandmother starve to death.
My grandmother slipped into a coma over the weekend. She had a stroke, they
say. She was only mildly responsive the first few days, and now she's not
responsive at all. She looks around and things but it doesn't appear that she's
actually aware of her environment. She cannot swallow. They say that if we
tried giving her water she would drown. In accordance with her wishes, they are
not keeping her on life support - this includes not feeding her or giving her
water. She is starving and dehydrating to death just like Terri Schiavo did.
It all seems so simple, so easy. No one is protesting, no one is fighting it.
It's what she wanted, and she made it known well in advance - in writing. All I
can say is people, get yourself a living will if that's what you want.
Otherwise, others might presume the right to put your loved ones through a
living hell when the time comes for those decisions to be made. It sounds
brutal, but I know my grandmother well enough to know she'd rather starve to
death than become a public spectacle "opportunist magnet" like Terry Schiavo
did.
My grandma was a deeply religious woman trapped in a loveless marriage to a
bitter and hate-filled man who - typical of homosexuals of his generation - felt
compelled to marry a woman because it was "God's will". They were both
"trapped", not just her, by the circumstances of the era into which they were
born.
Uncle Larry, if you're out there and happen to be reading this (I have reason to
suspect you might be), your mother is dying. I thought you should know, and I
don't believe they know how to contact you. If you're not, you'll find out the
next time you get in touch with anyone back in Jerome.
That's all. Thanks for reading.

Oh hon, I am SO sorry. However, I hope you do take comfort in the fact that
your grandmother's wishes are being upheld and she's leaving the planet with
the dignity she wanted and deserved.
Hang in there. I'll be thinking of you.

I'm sorry to hear that your grandmother is dying, Buck. I know you
said she left a living will, but it's still not easy to carry out her
wishes. My Mom died back in January of 2004, after we had her taken
off the respirator according to her living will. I know what you're
going through. I'm sending you some good vibes to get you through.

Yep, my dad passed away December 2004 after being taken off the respirator
according to his living will. The hospital staff didn't even ask for it.
Just stated there was no hope and assumed (rightly) this is what he and we
would have wanted. They were extremely compassionate during a very
emotional time.

Once upon a time in alt.atheism, dear sweet Uncle Buck
(UncleBuck@SpamMeNot.com) made the light shine upon us with this:

My grandmother slipped into a coma over the weekend. She had a
stroke, they say. She was only mildly responsive the first few days,
and now she's not responsive at all. She looks around and things but
it doesn't appear that she's actually aware of her environment. She

is starving and dehydrating to death just like Terri Schiavo did.

fighting it. It's what she wanted, and she made it known well in

I'm sorry for your pain, but you seem to have a handle on the situation.
They don't last forever. Good luck with the relatives.
