End this chorus of intolerance

It is uncivilised to demand that Muslims abandon their way of life
Roy Hattersley
Friday August 12, 2005
The Guardian
The best thing that can be said for the critics of multiculturalism is
that they are confused. Their muddled thinking was perfectly
illustrated last week by David Davis, the shadow home secretary, when
he denounced the concept and then added that he welcomed "the
mainstream version of Islam as part of British society". That is as
good a definition of multiculturalism as we are likely to get.
The charitable explanation of the confusion is ignorance - an inability
to distinguish between integration and assimilation. The alternative
interpretation is more sinister. Muslims are accepted in Britain - but
only if they cease to behave like Muslims.

The ******* it is if their "way of life" includes the concept
that there is only one way to live, and anyone who does not live that
way deserves to live in apartheid (if willing), or die (if not).
Sometimes, "being civilized" means running a civilized country and
exporting those who will not, or cannot, be civilized. It may no longer
be an era in which we can take "the white man's burden" to others, but
the Hell if we're going to abandon a humanistic future at home.

According to that logic, if a Jew is guilty of something then all Jews
have to be gassed.
Do you know where that logic leads to?

Are *all* Muslims as a group guilty of those crimes (real or perceived)?

So no.

Some Muslims may think that. It's dangerous to think that *all* Muslims
think that way. Most Muslims are law abiding like most of the
population.

I really don't care. What Einstein was or wasn't has as much to do
with what you're supposedly responding to as the number of angels who
can dance on the head of a pin has to do with reality. You
mischaracterized what Elf wrote, period. You had to ignore the half
dozen "if"s in the post to come up with the judgement you did. Not
only that, but you pulled that bit about "gassing" straight out of
your arse, absolutely nothing in his post even came close to
referencing such a thing. Because you had to twist and lie solely for
the purpose of trying to make someone else look bad, your
mischaracterization was malicious. Distraction tactics be damned.

mischaracterized what Elf wrote, period.

Of course you don't care if millions of people die. It's your choice.

Whooo-hooo, okayyyyy then. Now that I know you're hallucinating, I
think I'll just leave you the hell alone. :-)

So the holocaust was just a hallucination?

No, but what you claim I said sure was. :-)

That is a gross mischaracterization of what I wrote.

Not only gross, but malicious as well, imo.

Were Einstein, et al malicious as well?

I really don't care. What Einstein was or wasn't has as much to do
with what you're supposedly responding to as the number of angels who
can dance on the head of a pin has to do with reality. You
mischaracterized what Elf wrote, period. You had to ignore the half

I didn't claim anything. I was pointing to the similarities in the
demonization of Jews for 1,700 years and the current demonization of
Muslims.

End this chorus of intolerance

It is uncivilised to demand that Muslims abandon their way of life

<snip>
I agree that government poo-bah David Davis is confused, but columnist
Roy Hattersley is even confuseder. <G>
Hattersley makes no distinction between public and private expression
of beliefs, seems not to understand that Muslim dress varies widely
among various Muslim countries and is therefore far more culturally
than religiously based, and seems generally not to understand the
difference between malleable cultural customs and religious observance.
Hattersley also ignores what most people consider the obligation of
government to ensure freedom of religion and freedom of culture, both
of which include the freedom of individuals to choose to change. Many
Muslims (or the subsequent generation) would like to assimilate but are
held back, often forcibly, by the mullah mafia. As I read Hattersley,
he'd take a hands-off approach that lets that thrive unchecked.
IMO, neither of these characters are being helpful.
