Object: Even MORE depressing news about Bush....
In case any of you are feeling at all optimistic, the current issue of
Skeptic magazine has a nice article documenting how the Bush
administration tries to force science to conform to Bush's ideology,
rather than using it to help make rational decisions.

Yeah, mon. That's just what we need to dwell on tonight. You don't mind
if I get a good little sleep before I read it, do you? {;-)

And this is a surprise?

Take heart, Mark. The back page editorial of last week's Time Magazine
had a nice little rant on progress and the futility of the attempt to
hold it back. Cheered me up immeasurably. The current crop of neocons
can try with all their might to keep their fingers in the dam but they
can't hold back the water.
They've been trying since religion was first invented to quell science,
discovery, human evolution and the granting of human rights and they
haven't succeeded. Why? Because some things are inevitable. We're
living through a short hitch in the gitalong, nothing more. (I try to
imagine what it must've been like to live during the Red Scare era or
the depression or during the first days of WWII or the plagues in
Europe. Now is better.)
Dubya only has a couple of years to do what he's gonna do and then it's
all over for him. Regardless, the worst he does can always be undone.
Progress will be made. Stem cell research will go forward, homosexuals
will be accepted as human beings with the same rights, birth control
will get safer and more accurate, alternate sources of energy will be
found and exploited to a greater degree. And religious influence will
decline.
Maybe that's why they're so shrill in their "victory." They know
they're fighting an ultimately losing battle. I almost feel sorry for
them.
Almost.

Thank you, Lib. Of course you (and Time magazine) are correct. The other
comforting thought is to remember that the worse the neocons screw
things up, the more potent the eventual backlash will be.

You're welcome. Though it doesn't make it any easier to bear knowing
it's only a temporary setback. This is the only life I've got and I
hate to waste even a moment of it being *****.
Though that's especially hard when I hear that Bush's new Intelligence
Czar (and the beaurocracy accompanying it) is going to become a
reality. Hellooooo! Isn't gathering intelligence supposed to be the
job of the Pentagon and Joint Chiefs and the president? Oh, right. I
forgot. Intellectually, I know that Bush is just trying to insulate
himself from having to process data and make decisions he's too stupid
to understand but it still makes me want to tear my hair out that so
many people just don't see that we are being "led" by the Village
Idiot!
I'm having a really big bumper sticker made and I'm going to put it in
my car's back window. It's going to say: "WE TRIED TO WARN YOU!"
(The complaints are starting already here in California over Bush's
proposal to halt the labeling of produce with where it comes from.
They don't like that at all but, hey, he's "still better than Kerry."
The rationalization is starting early this time around.)
Ya just gotta laugh.

Neocons are Stalinists. Reality is what neocons make it. Theirs is not
to engage, discuss and debate, but rather to thrust and to rape.

You're Catholic, Earl - one of those the Bush types consider to be
idol worshippers.
