Evil Bible Quote of the Day for Feb. 11 (Peter Kills Two People) |
Evil Bible Quote of the Day for Feb. 11, 2004 from www.EvilBible.com:
Peter Kills Two People (Acts 5:1-11 NLT)
"There was also a man named Ananias who, with his wife, Sapphira, sold
some property. He brought part of the money to the apostles, but he claimed
it was the full amount. His wife had agreed to this deception. Then Peter
said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart? You lied to the Holy
Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself. The property was yours
to sell or not sell, as you wished. And after selling it, the money was
yours to give away. How could you do a thing like this? You weren't lying
to us but to God." As soon as Ananias heard these words, he fell to the
floor and died. Everyone who heard about it was terrified. Then some young
men wrapped him in a sheet and took him out and buried him. About three
hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. Peter asked
her, "Was this the price you and your husband received for your land?"
"Yes," she replied, "that was the price." And Peter said, "How could the
two of you even think of doing a thing like this - conspiring together to
test the Spirit of the Lord? Just outside that door are the young men who
buried your husband, and they will carry you out, too." Instantly, she fell
to the floor and died. When the young men came in and saw that she was
dead, they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. Great fear
gripped the entire church and all others who heard what had happened."
What kind of person would get their moral guidance from an ancient book of
myths and magic that says it is OK to murder, rape, pillage, and plunder?

"Where's the Beef?" James 2:14-17 (RSV)
"What does it profit, my brethren, if a man says he has faith but has
not works? Can his faith save him? If a brother or sister is ill-clad
and in lack of daily food, and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be
warmed and filled," without giving them the things needed for
the body, what does it profit? So faith by itself, if it has no works,
is dead."

Actually that's a good quote to use on fundies who insist that faith
alone is enough.

This is what the Geneva Bible footnote says about that verse;
The fifth place which follows very well with the former treatise,
concerning a true and living faith. The proposition of the place is
this: Faith which does not bring forth works is not that faith by
means of which we are justified, but an false image of that faith, or
else this: they who do not show the effects of faith are not justified
by faith.

Apparently Ananias and Sapphira were highly suggestible because they
both harbored a guilty conscience for their lies. The story is harsh,
severe, uncompromising in the telling; but how is falsehood ever
confronted except in a manner which always seems severe to the one
tangled in deceit? Serious deceit of ones self or others is a way that
ultimately leads to death, sooner or later, in this case sooner. We are
vulnerable animals who try to secure and establish our lives in improper
ways, living by our wits rather than by faith, just as these two did.

Which turns the bible into a morality play instead of a
history book. Most of the people mentioned in the bible
never existed. Also, one would have to be pretty stupid to
believe that those two people died in that manner.

Anianas and his wife deserved death because they had tried to cheat God.
Peter was merely carrying out God's judgement on them. Though our God is
merciful and loving, we are to fear his wrath which he brings upon all evil.
Now, pray tell me where in the bible does God approve of murder, rape,
pillage and plunder?
God never approves of murder which is the unjust killing of a person. Peter
did not murder the Ananias and his wife. Instead we read from the bible
that the murder of Ish-bosheth incensed David and he executed the murderers.
Similarly the wrath of the Lord, expressed through David's lament, burned
against Joab for the murder of Abner.
God never approves of rape or immorality. David was punished for his liason
with Bathsheba and also for murdering her husband.
Neither does God approve of pillage or plunder. He told them not to take
the spoils of Jericho and when one man disobeyed the Israelites lost courage
in battle, suffering a series of defeats. In the end, the guilty man was
put to death for he had disobeyed a direct order from God.

Anianas and his wife deserved death because they had tried to cheat God.
They weren't trying to cheat anyone. They sold their belongings to join
Peter's cult. They gave some, but not all, of the proceeds to Peter. Peter
killed them for not giving him everything they owned.
Peter was merely carrying out God's judgment on them.
Gods do not exist. Peter merely claimed that God killed them to avoid
criminal charges.
Though our God is
merciful and loving, we are to fear his wrath which he brings upon all
evil.
Now, pray tell me where in the bible does God approve of murder, rape,
pillage and plunder?

Pillage and Rape: http://www.evilbible.com/Rape.htm
God never approves of murder which is the unjust killing of a person.
Then what did the children in the following passages do that was unjust and
deserving of death?
If even then you remain hostile toward me and refuse to obey, I will inflict
you with seven more disasters for your sins. I will release wild animals
that will kill your children and destroy your cattle, so your numbers will
dwindle and your roads will be deserted. (Leviticus 26:21-22 NLT)
Please, Lord, prove that your power is as great as you have claimed it to
be. For you said, "The LORD is slow to anger and rich in unfailing love,
forgiving every kind of sin and rebellion. Even so he does not leave sin
unpunished, but he punishes the children for the sins of their parents to
the third and fourth generations." (Numbers 14:17-18 NLT)
Thus says the Lord: 'I will bring evil upon you out of your own house.
I will take your wives [plural] while you live to see it, and will give them
to your neighbor. He shall lie with your wives in broad daylight. You have
done this deed in secret, but I will bring it about in the presence of all
Israel, and with the sun looking down.' Then David said to Nathan, "I have
sinned against the Lord." Nathan answered David: "The Lord on his part has
forgiven your sin: you shall not die. But since you have utterly spurned
the Lord by this deed, the child born to you must surely die." (The child
dies seven days later.) (2 Samuel 12:11-14 NAB)
Peter
did not murder the Ananias and his wife. Instead we read from the bible
that the murder of Ish-bosheth incensed David and he executed the
murderers.
Similarly the wrath of the Lord, expressed through David's lament, burned
against Joab for the murder of Abner.
David was dead for a thousand years when this happened.
God never approves of rape or immorality. David was punished for his
liason
with Bathsheba and also for murdering her husband.
Once again see my web page about rape in the Bible:
http://www.evilbible.com/Rape.htm
Neither does God approve of pillage or plunder. He told them not to take
the spoils of Jericho and when one man disobeyed the Israelites lost
courage
in battle, suffering a series of defeats. In the end, the guilty man was
put to death for he had disobeyed a direct order from God.
There are literally hundreds of passages in the Bible where God says to
pillage and plunder. Read the Old Testament sometime.

I find it interesting that of all the folks who
ever attempted to "cheat God" only the two who had
the misfortune of trying to GIVE CHARITABLY to Peter
and his mission get murdered, or killed if you prefer,
in any case, getting dead for their trouble.
They deserved this, but nobody else does?
That's an awfully "Old Testament" God, considering that
Peter and his crew are going about building a religion
that holds forth a merciful and forgiving God.
I would be interested in hearing about other New Testament
stories that feature this "Old Testament" God, smiting
those who rub Him the wrong way, teaching lessons with
death sentences.
