Evil Bible Quote of the Day for Jan. 21 (Sampson) |
Evil Bible Quote of the Day for Jan. 21, 2004 from www.EvilBible.com:
Sampson and the Spirit of the Lord (Judges 14:19 NAB)
"The spirit of the Lord came upon him [Sampson], and he went down to
Ashkelon, where he killed thirty of their men and despoiled them; he gave
their garments to those who had answered his riddle." [Sampson used the
garments to pay off a bet he lost.]
What kind of person would get their moral guidance from an ancient book of
myths and magic that says it is OK to murder, rape, pillage, and plunder?

A kind of person who understands that the book is ancient and it
doesn't say that.
It says, *it may have been OK to murder back 2500 years ago*, but...
Surprise! We are not ancient Jews. We moved on; our ethics moved on, and
so did our morals, our theology, our entire worldview.

I thought your loving god was omnipitent and all knowing - he thought murder
was okay 2500 years ago then changed his mind ?

The Earth is degenerating these days. Bribery and corruption abound.
Children no longer mind their parents, every man wants to write a book, and
it is evident that the end of the world is fast approaching.

Whilst I do not hide the fact that I'm a Christian, I beg you to point out
where in my response I refered to my understanding of God. (Personally, I do
not consider God a valid subject.) When discussing the meaning of the scripture
with people who do not share my relifious views I carefuly avoid any reference
to God itself, and always talk about someone's understanding of God.
That our understanding of God changed, should be clear even to the most
conservative Christians today.

What actually changed is the style of fiction that these liars were writing.
The OT big, mean and bad God wasn't selling so they came up with a sequel,
the son of God.

The understanding of God is very different from the understanding of
language and syntax. Christians have the best scholars translating
their scriptures into English; modern versions of the OT are the
closest to the early Hebrew they have ever had. If they now reject the
words of their scriptures because don't agree with them and that they
have some better source for describing their God then no wonder other
folk fall about laughing.

Err yes we moved on despite ancient books proclaiming to know it all.
If anything, your text suggests we should leave the religion crap behind and
make something of this world :)

On the contrary, I think that we should take Bible for what it is:
the collection of ancient sacred texts; take religion for what it is:
one of the primary ways of human self-expression (just like art), and
make something *good* of this world.
