Evil Bible Quote of the Day for Jan. 5, 2004 from www.EvilBible.com:
Towns Murdered (Numbers 21:1-3 NLT)
The Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that the
Israelites were approaching on the road to Atharim. So he attacked the
Israelites and took some of them as prisoners. Then the people of Israel
made this vow to the LORD: "If you will help us conquer these people, we
will completely destroy all their towns." The LORD heard their request and
gave them victory over the Canaanites. The Israelites completely destroyed
them and their towns, and the place has been called Hormah ever since.
What kind of person would get their moral guidance from an ancient book of
myths and magic that says it is OK to murder, rape, pillage, and plunder?

Isn't the NT God supposed to be the same as the OT God?
And Jesus himself says to obey all the OT laws.
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have
come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and

Look at the world: the goings on e.g. the slaughter - genocide - that went
on in Rwanda in 1994. Doesn't the OT depict a similar world? Slaughters and
killings, generally a bloodfest.
Manifestly, the 'Law' is accurate. We fall short of that 'Law' and the
result is all manner of death and evil. That 'Law' holds the world in its
grip. But the Gospel message is that you can leave that world, spiritually
through Jesus. He is life not death - His 'Law' is the law of love. Love
your neighbour, do good to those who hate you. The letter will kill you, the
spirit will be life for you. Jesus wants us to follow His way and His 'Law'
is not the old covenant way where we avenge, where we take life for life.
Sure, you will find plenty of Christians who don't understand that or are at
a variety of stages of learning that. For instance many American Christians
of the Bible-thumping variety pretty much still live by the OT law of an eye
for an eye, a life for a life. But if you want to know the truth then you
must leave that world of hate, legalism, revenge, execution and death and
live in the light of forgiveness.
There's not much I can say. People who truly want to live in love and
forgiveness often don't get this world's accolades. As you know they bear
the brunt of a lot of hatred and blame. I don't care what you think -
you've made it clear you don't think much of Catholics - but I'm going to
try to live a life in the Spirit anyway.

Look at the world: the goings on e.g. the slaughter - genocide - that went
on in Rwanda in 1994. Doesn't the OT depict a similar world? Slaughters

and

killings, generally a bloodfest.

Manifestly, the 'Law' is accurate. We fall short of that 'Law' and the
result is all manner of death and evil.

Dude, we're not talking about what people do ordinarily, we're talking about
what people do at the supposed orders of their god character. Yes, it's a
slaughter and bloodfest, but the bible clearly describes the god character
commanding the slaughter, and personally participating in the bloodfest. The
OT doesn't just depict a brutal world as you are dishonestly trying to
suggest, the god character is clearly depicted as ENFORCING the world to be
brutal.
And you worship that god character.

That 'Law' holds the world in its
grip. But the Gospel message is that you can leave that world, spiritually
through Jesus. He is life not death - His 'Law' is the law of love. Love
your neighbour, do good to those who hate you. The letter will kill you,

the

spirit will be life for you. Jesus wants us to follow His way and His

'Law'

is not the old covenant way where we avenge, where we take life for life.

Yet the Jesus saga is all about ritual human torture and sacrifice. Murder,
suffering, and blood. And for what? Why, for your personal benefit.
Yeah, yeah, the Jesus character supposedly died for us, but somehow he's not
dead. He supposedly sacrificed everything, but somehow he's also king of the
universe. We're well aware of the mind-numbing contradictions involved in
your fable. I'm sure the Aztecs had great excuses for their sacrifices too,
but at least they didn't try to fool themselves into thinking they weren't
bloodthirsty.

Sure, you will find plenty of Christians who don't understand that or are

at

a variety of stages of learning that. For instance many American

Christians

of the Bible-thumping variety pretty much still live by the OT law of an

eye

for an eye, a life for a life. But if you want to know the truth then you
must leave that world of hate, legalism, revenge, execution and death and
live in the light of forgiveness.

Ah, so you're another "true" Christian. We get so many in here that spout
contradictory crap. Can you think of a reason we should agree that your
interpretation of the bible is more true than the Bible-thumping variety? Is
there a test that would offer objective evidence that you're right and
they're wrong?
Can you even imagine being wrong?

There's not much I can say. People who truly want to live in love and
forgiveness often don't get this world's accolades. As you know they bear
the brunt of a lot of hatred and blame.

Yes, us atheists are often trodden upon. We're one of the few remaining
minorities that can be safely insulted in public. I strive for a better
world, one not steeped in ignorance and irrationality, but I'm met with no
accolades from the theistic majority.

I don't care what you think -
you've made it clear you don't think much of Catholics - but I'm going to
try to live a life in the Spirit anyway.

That's because you believe you cannot be wrong.

"The History of WW2" also depicts a bloodfest. That adds absolutely nothing
to our current discussion.
I see you didn't answer the question: "Isn't the NT God supposed to be the
same as the OT God?" Are you afraid of the answer? Please answer it.

Manifestly, the 'Law' is accurate. We fall short of that 'Law' and the
result is all manner of death and evil. That 'Law' holds the world in its

the

spirit will be life for you. Jesus wants us to follow His way and His

'Law'

is not the old covenant way where we avenge, where we take life for life.

The Jesus quotes above clearly refer to the Old Testament laws. They don't
refer to "love your neighbor".

So, just to make certain we're all on the same page:
First Bup whined about OT vs NT passages as posted by Editor, with
references to the Torah. When that was shown to be a pathetic attempt at
diverting attention, he then tries to justify the slaughter not once, but
TWICE.
Now he (Bup) is trying to simply chant the usual mantra of
"God-is-love-and-we-just-don't-undertand(tm)," all the while moving further
away from the subject of: God(tm) is a murderous piece of *****.
Sorry Bup, but you worship a bloodthirsty piece of garbage that, even if
real, wouldn't be worth the sweat on my nuts.

Wow, a single quote out of context. That one had to be read with
understanding i.e. that God must come first in one's heart. If one clings to
family, self-statisfaction and worldly concerns and ignore God, one is not

Wow, a single quote out of context. That one had to be read with
understanding i.e. that God must come first in one's heart. If one
clings to family, self-statisfaction and worldly concerns and ignore
God, one is not truly following Jesus. The passage is not talking about
viciousness.

My point still stands, he rarely quotes from the NT - no doubt because

Uh-huh. Out of context. What do you think the next verse is? "Just
kidding"?
The most important aspect of human society is the nuclear family. If one
must throw those values out the window to appease the god thingy, how can
you not view THAT as self-satisfaction?
The concept of salvation is one of the most arrogant, self-centered
concepts imaginable. Jesus is regarded as your personal savior. He
removes your fear of death, replacing it with hope of a warm, fuzzy
afterlife. You people are even willing to march off into war, perhaps to
get killed, under the guise of serving your country - when in fact you are
only doing it out of fear of consequences, and confidence that *your* soul
will be saved. Religion is the most self-satisfying concept on earth.

Uh-huh. Out of context. What do you think the next verse is? "Just
kidding"?

No, but somehow in the rest of Luke the same Jesus commends loving
even your enemies, and that is the context you seem to be missing.

The most important aspect of human society is the nuclear family.

Jews in that period did not have a concept of nuc'ular family;
rather, a much larger clan, with all the generations & relations,
was considered a family, and often lived packed closely together,
even under the same roof.

If one
must throw those values out the window to appease the god thingy, how can
you not view THAT as self-satisfaction?

NT writers seem to be convinced that people should be loved equally,
that everyone has the same intrinsic value (or, using their lingo, is
just as dear to God) regardless of how they are related to you,
or how Jewish they are. Jesus had to be very hyperbolic in this verse
because he wanted to contrast the exclusive treatment of one's
bloodline with doing what he taught: loving everyone, just because
they are human.

The concept of salvation is one of the most arrogant, self-centered
concepts imaginable. Jesus is regarded as your personal savior.

It can be argued that "personal salvation" is a much later doctrine.
Notice how church is implied to be the new Israel, how much value
the writers place on gathering of the believers, and how the prayer
starts with "Our father", not "My father". Rather than saving
themselves, Christians were initially charged with "saving the world":
i.e., making it a better place to live for others, through self-denial.

He
removes your fear of death, replacing it with hope of a warm, fuzzy
afterlife. You people are even willing to march off into war, perhaps to
get killed, under the guise of serving your country - when in fact you are
only doing it out of fear of consequences, and confidence that *your* soul
will be saved. Religion is the most self-satisfying concept on earth.

Fear of consequences, and the hope of a personal salvation from them
(duh, because you are God's buddy), are also added later. Compared to what we
have now, afterlife was very little develoved in apocalyptic Judaism;
certanly there was no notion of eternal torment of souls in the early
teaching.

No, but somehow in the rest of Luke the same Jesus commends loving
even your enemies, and that is the context you seem to be missing.

Context: 1. The part of a text or statement that *surrounds* a particular
word or passage and determines its meaning. 2. The circumstances in which an
event occurs; a setting.
(The American Heritage Dictionary 4th ed.)
Context: 1 : the parts of a discourse that *surround* a word or passage and
can throw light on its meaning
2 : the interrelated conditions in which something exists or occurs :
ENVIRONMENT, SETTING
(M-W dictionary)
The "love your enemy" quote is in Luke 6:27. The "hate your family" quote
is in Luke 14:26. Clearly this can not be evidence of my quote being taken
out of context. Actually it is a good example of your pseudo-scientific
B.S. that you claim to be using.

That's why Christians love the Bible so much. They take the parts they like
and say they are from God. The parts they don't like are taken out of
context. I could have just as easily claimed the "hate your family" quote
proves that the "love your enemy" quote is taken out of context.

Yup. He wants you to love your enemies, but ignore your family. Where

Isn't Luke where Jesus calls his critics fools, thus making himself, by

Besides which, last I heard, the OT is part of the Christian Bible too.
Or do you think that since God blood-sacrificed his own son, he's
suddenly a good guy now, all is forgiven? You know, the NT says God is
love, God is omnibenevolent, and says he's *always* been like that. So,
in effect, the NT endorses everything God ever did in the OT. You can't
discount the OT by saying that the NT is more touchy-feely.

shown with Luke 14:26. It is the fundies that are incapable of reading those

I see you couldn't argue with the post, so you made your petty,

irrelevant.

But since you mentioned it, and would like to begin a flame war, perhaps you
should consider your ineptitude with regard to punctuation and sentence
structure: essentially you suck at it. It's the mentally insignificant
people like you that are incapable of formulating any sort of legitimate or

Do you know how to construct a recognizable sentence?

I did not think this was a forum for us to express our punctuation and

It seems obvious you haven't attended Catholic school. Punctuation and
sentence construction and diagramming are very important there.

If I remember right, its a place for Roman Catholics
to have discussions

Not necessarily. It's just a place to discuss Roman Catholicism in
general, pro or con.

not a place we should have to put up with the likes

Deal with it, or killfile it.

Your point?

You idiots prance around here claiming "God(tm) is love" and similar
*****. Editor simply outs you people as morons that worship an

piece

of

*****.

And to show you that the NT isn't much better, here's a Gospel message

for

you:

Luke 14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother,

Wow what a command of the English language you have,

Fuckin' A right I do. Unlike the Jesus freaks around here, I can easily
identify when a passage in the Bible promotes hatred of the family as

I've

shown with Luke 14:26. It is the fundies that are incapable of reading

those

words and interpreting them properly. They insist on distorting and
twisting, with one idiot twisting it to the point that he decided that
passage actually meant that everyone hated the disciple-in-training.

I have already added my two pennies. :)

Yeah. We heard. We weren't impressed.

But once again all you are
showing is the only level you are able to express yourself (very sad).

I have many ways to express myself.
So, I'll spare your pathetic, sensitive delicacies and reply with: please
indulge in self-fornication. If you don't like my attitude, then don't talk
to me.

A little hint I would not brag about it! :)

I may be an obnoxious *****, but my ethics, honesty, nor integrity are
ever questioned.
To the contrary, one only must hear a few words from the average fundy to
learn that if they ever found out that no Great Sky Pixie was watching them,
they would be the most worthless, lying piece of ***** on my planet. It is
only the fear of a devine retribution that keeps them in line. They use the
euphemism of "moral compass."
That, sir, is a pathetic state of affairs.

I did not think this was a forum for us to express our punctuation and
sentence skills ?

You started it with your whining about profanity in the form of the usual,
canned, "lame," I-have-nothing-legitimate-to-say responses. I merely
responded in kind.

If I remember right, its a place for Roman Catholics

Guess again, flyboy. You're cross-posting into alt.atheism. Trying to
justify the slaughter of people by wrapping the God(tm) Cloak around you and
then presenting that ***** to Atheists is a fast way to have your head
handed to you on a platter....so to speak.

The Israelites attacked first. My quote is completely in context. What did
you think the Israelites were coming to do, pick flowers? Read the Bible
sometime. The Israelite hatred of the Canaanites starts in Genesis 9 and
continues throughout most of the Old Testament. The covenant between God
and the Israelites was an agreement that if the Israelites would obey Moses'
commandments then God would wipe out the Canaanites. The Israelite genocide
of the Canaanites is one of the *major* themes in the OT.

The Israelites attacked first.

Wrong
My quote is completely in context.
No it is not.
What did

you think the Israelites were coming to do, pick flowers? Read the Bible
sometime.

I have!
The Israelite hatred of the Canaanites starts in Genesis 9 and

continues throughout most of the Old Testament.

Why is this!
The covenant between God

and the Israelites was an agreement that if the Israelites would obey Moses'
commandments then God would wipe out the Canaanites. The Israelite genocide
of the Canaanites is one of the *major* themes in the OT.

Now once again you are wrong !
One of the purposes of the original form of this story was to explain
the name of a place called “Hormah,” which in Hebrew means “destruction”
(v. 3). A conflict at Hormah had also been mentioned at the end of the
spy story in 14:39-45. The story in 21:1-3 seems to be an alternate
tradition about this same conflict at Hormah. In the context of the
present narrative, this successful conquest of Arad at Hormah signals
God’s continuing faithfulness and intention to bring Israel into the
promised land. When Israel trusts in God alone, then God will give
victory to Israel. The Hormah story in 14:39-45 makes the same
theological point in negative terms: when the people disobey and do not
trust in God but only in their own strength and resources, they will
suffer defeat.
