Evil Bible Quote of the Day for June 26 (Mediums Can Talk to the Dead) |
Evil Bible Quote of the Day for June 26, 2004 from www.EvilBible.com:
Mediums Can Talk to the Dead (1 Samuel 28:7-17)
Saul then said to his advisers, "Find a woman who is a medium, so I can
go and ask her what to do."His advisers replied, "There is a medium at
Endor." So Saul disguised himself by wearing ordinary clothing instead of
his royal robes. Then he went to the woman's home at night, accompanied by
two of his men."I have to talk to a man who has died," he said. "Will you
call up his spirit for me?" "Are you trying to get me killed?" the woman
demanded. "You know that Saul has expelled all the mediums and psychics
from the land. Why are you setting a trap for me?" But Saul took an oath
in the name of the LORD and promised, "As surely as the LORD lives, nothing
bad will happen to you for doing this." Finally, the woman said, "Well,
whose spirit do you want me to call up?"
"Call up Samuel," Saul replied. When the woman saw Samuel, she
screamed, "You've deceived me! You are Saul!" "Don't be afraid!" the king
told her. "What do you see?" "I see a god coming up out of the earth," she
said. "What does he look like?" Saul asked."He is an old man wrapped in a
robe," she replied. Saul realized that it was Samuel, and he fell to the
ground before him. "Why have you disturbed me by calling me back?" Samuel
asked. "Because I am in deep trouble," Saul replied. "The Philistines are
at war with us, and God has left me and won't reply by prophets or dreams.
So I have called for you to tell me what to do." But Samuel replied, "Why
ask me if the LORD has left you and has become your enemy? The LORD has
done just as he said he would. He has taken the kingdom from you and given
it to your rival, David. (1 Samuel 28:7-17)
What kind of person would get their moral guidance from an ancient book of
myths and magic that says it is OK to murder, rape, pillage, and plunder?

Point of order. Anyone can talk to the dead. You, me, anyone. The
problems usually begin when you hearing replies...!

I once watched my brother shake the ***** out a dead old lady laid out in a
coffin. She didn't seem to mind. He didn't get in trouble either, so I
guess she didn't tell anyone.

"Psychics"!? The word psychic appears in the bible? And "medium"?
Isn't that a little -- oh I don't know -- anachronistic? Even for a modern
translation?
Hmmm... I wonder if those words have modern implications that were not
present at the time the bible was written?
I'm beginning to see how a simple translation can have profound effects on
meaning.

Ehhh... The word psychic today carries a psudeo-scientific aire, and many of
its proponents try to divorce it completely from anything supernatural, so I
would say the word is colored somewhat differently from the biblical version
which is all about spirits and supernatural beings.
That's not to say it's not a kook belief either way.
At least that's how it seems to me. ;-)

Simple translation? That's a new concept for me! EvilEd's efforts
are pointed in this case...
This all depends on your definition of "chancellor of the hallow"
(familiar spirit) which would be the psychic medium, and "conjurer"
(wizard) which would be the sorcerer. Though "conjurer" isn't used in
EvilEd's conversion, it's included with the original text in question.
Reference:
-- King James
1 Samuel 28:7 Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that
hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and inquire of her. And
his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a
familiar spirit at Endor.
-- New King James
1 Samuel 28:7 Then Saul said to his servants, "Find me a woman who is
a medium, that I may go to her and inquire of her.'' And his servants
said to him, "In fact, there is a woman who is a medium at En Dor.''
-- King James
1 Samuel 28:9 And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what
Saul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits,
and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a snare
for my life, to cause me to die?
-- New King James
1 Samuel 28:9 Then the woman said to him, "Look, you know what Saul
has done, how he has cut off the mediums and the spiritists from the
land. Why then do you lay a snare for my life, to cause me to die?''
