Evil Bible Quote of the Day for Oct. 23, 2003 from www.EvilBible.com:
God Creates Calamity (Isaiah 45:7 NAS)
"The One forming light and creating darkness, Causing well-being and
creating calamity; I am the LORD who does all these."
What kind of person would get their moral guidance from an ancient book of
myths and magic that says it is OK to murder, rape, pillage, and plunder?

Let's see. I rather like a good paraphrase for study purposes, at
least to refer to when the NIV or the Berkley is being stubborn:
From The Living Bible:
"I am the one who creates the light and makes the darkness. I am the
one who sends good times and bad times. I, the LORD, am the one who
does these things."
An Amplified Bible can be helpful too:
"I form the light and create darkness, I make peace [national
well-being] and I create [physical] evil (calamity); I am the Lord,
Who does all these things."
I will admit that these two translations aren't exactly making the
verse any more cheerful.
I just find the NAB's word choices to be somewhat archaic and overly
dramatic, myself. Wouldn't be my first choice for a translation, but
then it's not my site.
Anyway, I think the verse is saying that God created the whole ball of
wax: the light, and the dark to put it in. Would it be a dichotomy to
say you can't have one without the other?

Tell that to Randy Story, who claims "evil is the absence of good." He
absolutely refuses to believe that his God created evil, even when the book
supposedly inspired by his God clearly says so.

Of course I use whatever translation of the Bible sounds the most evil.
They were all translated by religious people so many of them are biased to
sound less evil. The most evil translation is most likely closer to the
true meaning.

Surely there are more authentic, as in closer to the original,
translation.

I think the NAB is a very accurate translation. At least they have the
balls to call a person who is bought and sold a slave instead of a servant.

"Calamity" is the *less* nasty-sounding version. Most translations use
"evil".
