Instead, you have been as evil as the kings of Israel. You have led the
people of Jerusalem and Judah to worship idols, just as King Ahab did in
Israel. And you have even killed your own brothers, men who were better
than you. So now the LORD is about to strike you, your people, your
children, your wives, and all that is yours with a heavy blow. You yourself
will be stricken with a severe intestinal disease until it causes your
bowels to come out.'"
"Then the LORD stirred up the Philistines and the Arabs, who lived near
the Ethiopians, to attack Jehoram. They marched against Judah, broke down
its defenses, and carried away everything of value in the royal palace,
including his sons and his wives. Only his youngest son, Ahaziah, was
spared. It was after this that the LORD struck Jehoram with the severe
intestinal disease. In the course of time, at the end of two years, the
disease caused his bowels to come out, and he died in agony. His people did
not build a great fire to honor him at his funeral as they had done for his
ancestors."
What kind of person would get their moral guidance from an ancient book of
myths and magic that says it is OK to murder, rape, pillage, and plunder?

Commentary: 2 Chronicles 21:12-19
12-15 That Jehoram "received a letter from Elijah" has been labeled a product of
the imagination, on the basis that Elijah had nothing to do with the southern
kingdom and clearly was not living at this time (2Ki 3:11 [i.e., before
Jehoshaphat's death and Jehoram's installation in 848 B.C.]). However, Elijah's
career did involve the south, specifically "Beersheba in Judah" (1Ki 19:3); his
flight took him, indeed, as far south as Sinai (v.8). Also, though Elijah's last
dated act occurred in 852 (2Ki 1:3, 17), his translation to heaven (2:11) still
need not have occurred till after Jehoram's accession as sole monarch over Judah
and his crimes of slaughtering his brothers and his officials, in the year 848
(8:16). Elijah may, however, have been gone by the time of the delivery of his
letter, so that its sentence of doom could have had the force of a voice coming
from the dead.
16-17 The land's fortunes suffered a complete reversal; for "the Philistines,"
who had rendered tribute to Jehoram's father (2Ch 17:11), now "invaded Judah."
They were joined by "the Arabs who lived near the Cushites," i.e., by nomads
from the borderlands between Philistia and Egypt. In the outworkings of God's
justice, the man who began by massacring his own brothers (v.4) ended by
suffering the loss of his sons and wives (cf. 22:1).
18-20 The king's "incurable disease of the bowels" seems to have been some
extreme form of dysentery. In further contrast to his father (cf. 16:14), he
died without "fire in his honor." Jehoram's death was unmourned, without even
normal burial "in the tombs of the kings" (cf. 24:25).

of people in the rubble of collapsed buildings is for the good of humanity
and prevents us from doing evil.

of worthlessness.
So lost and self-loathing, so bereft of hope or pride,
that they can look into the hallucinated face of their imaginary
oppressor
and feel unbounded love and gratitude for the additional suffering
it has declined,
as yet,
to visit upon them.
I dislike people's need for a communal delusion,
like drug addicts who unite just to share the same needle.
I dislike the way reason is reviled as a vice
and reality is decreed to be a matter of convenience.
The way common sense and ordinary human decency
get re-named "holy law" and advertised as the sole province
of the faithful.

I dislike the hypocrisy,
