Evolution and Intelligent design... |
Creationists (read: Intelligent design proponents) want you to believe that
since no one has personally witnessed evolution as it is occuring, then it must
be make believe. By that same logic, since no one has personally witnessed an
animal being fossilized, fossils don't exist. Clearly that is not true.
Believers not only don't understand the difference between direct evidence and
indirect evidence. Fossils are rock solid evidence that evolution has occured
because they are a snapshot of ancient life, captured in sequence at random
moments in time over a period of billions of years. Fossils are indirect
evidence of evolution and fossils don't lie. There is no rock solid evidence
available for Intelligent Design, it is based purely on argument alone. Who is
this designer or designers and why is there no evidence that they exist anymore?

Might I present a piece of evidence in favor of both Intelligent Design
*AND* Evolution?
Consider any piece of modern technology. Technology is by definition the
result of intelligent design (though sometimes I wonder about the
intelligence of some of the designers...). If technology were viewed without
concern of its construction or its creator(s), it can also be seen that
technology is constantly evolving. Each new technological entity is a
variation of some prior art that may or may not include some new
functionality, or some revised old functionality. That is the nature of
evolution.
As far as species derivation is concerned, of course there are going to be
similarities. Some designs are good enough to re-use, even in un-related
projects. Boats and Bicycles share no common ancestor. Bicycles and Stage
Coaches do. Both are variations of a carriage. When carriages became
motorized, someone eventually tried to put the motor on a bicycle. The motor
is a decendant of a steam engine, something commonly used on boats. So
whether the objects have a related ancestry or not, there are some common
components in each design.
Evolution does not preclude intelligent design. Intelligent design does not
preclude evolution. Whether either was separately responsible for life or
they were together responsible is a matter of conjecture.

And yet they insist on a "designer" nobody's ever seen and nobody saw
doing any designing...
