We are living in an ageing population. Life expectancy has almost
doubled in this country over the past 150 years, owing to the
unnaturally improved conditions of modern civilisation. But would we
really like it to be considerably extended? Will all those clever
molecular biologists with the human genome under their fingers be able
to devise life-extension genomes? Unlikely, we all think, and just
consider how long it will take to find out if they are on the right
track. But look at how well they are doing with the lowly worm.
