Enraged motorist kills prankster
Victim, 23, was hurling tomatoes at passing cars in Holmes County
By Sallie Cook
Special to the Beacon Journal
MOUNT HOPE - A motorist enraged by a group of young people
throwing tomatoes at his car killed a 23-year-old Apple Creek man
late Monday by firing a shotgun into a cornfield.
Steven L. Keim of Swinehart Road, and 11 others, ages 15 to 23,
were throwing tomatoes and firing paint balls at passing vehicles
along state Route 241, north of Mount Hope, said Nathan L. Fritz,
Holmes County sheriff's chief deputy.
Keim was the only one in the group of women and men who was
struck by shotgun pellets, Fritz said. None of the others, all from
Wayne and Holmes counties, was injured, he said.
Deputies have no suspects. The motorist is described as having a
medium build and is middle-aged by the sound of his voice, Fritz
said.
``There is no artificial light out there,'' Fritz said. ``They didn't
recognize him.''
The motorist, who was driving a light-colored Lincoln or Cadillac,
stopped, got out of the car and warned that he would shoot
whoever threw the tomatoes. The vehicle continued north for a
short distance, turned around and drove by the cornfield again. The
car was struck by tomatoes a second time.
The man yelled obscenities at the group and drove off, Fritz said.
About 25 minutes later, the car drove by the cornfield a third time,
stopped, and the motorist challenged the group to throw more
tomatoes. The motorist then grabbed a shotgun from his car and
fired it three to five times into the cornfield, striking Keim, who
was about 35 yards away. Four shell casings have been recovered,
Fritz said.
Keim ran about 20 yards back into the cornfield then collapsed,
Fritz said. One of his friends called police by cell phone.
According to witnesses, the car drove by the cornfield twice more
before it turned onto Township Road 616 and was not seen again,
Fritz said.
The shots were not random, said Fritz, but were directed to one
part of the cornfield.
Fritz said he did not know if the man planned to shoot Keim. All of
the group was hiding one or two rows back in the cornfield, Fritz
said. Neighbors heard the commotion and called deputies about
11:30 p.m. Keim was struck about 10 minutes later, Fritz said.
Fritz said deputies plan to reinterview the teens and young adults
today. ``Some had conflicting stories,'' he said.
Fritz said incidents of throwing tomatoes at cars often happen
during the fall. A sheriff's cruiser was struck by a tomato Sunday
night, he said.
``It's something that goes on and is hard to prevent,'' he said.
The Stark County Coroner's Office was to have conducted an
autopsy Tuesday afternoon. Preliminary results are expected today,
a spokeswoman said.
Calling hours for Keim will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 2 to
4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at East Union Mennonite Church,
10678 Old Lincoln Way. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m.
Saturday at the church. Burial will be at Erb Cemetery in East
Union Township.
Keim was a partner in Reroof Specialties of Apple Creek. He is
survived by parents Reuben I. and Gladys V. Keim; sisters Juanita
and Rosanna; and a brother, Merlin D. Keim, all of Apple Creek.
Spidell funeral home in Mount Eaton is handling arrangements.

Umm, Mennonites are not Amish.
And a 23 year old man is not a kid, but murder is still murder.

You expect Howard to take the trouble to differentiate between Amish,
Mennonite, Anabaptist and any other sect he's not familiar with?

One does not shoot and kill people because they threw tomatos at one's car.

Either you or Howard Stern has read much more into the story than what
actually happened. Yes, the kids were throwing tomatoes. Stupid, but
it is not a capital offense. OTOH, the man drove to get a shotgun,
returned to the corn field 25 minutes later, and drove past the kids
two more times. Nothing was thrown at the car after he returned.
Despite this, the man got out of the car and shot into the corn field
killing one young man.

I assume that if he is located, the charge will be either premeditated
murder or reckless homicide. Any person who would deliberately take a
life on so little provocation is dangerous to society.

I saw nothing in the article that would suggest any of the kids
throwing tomatoes were wanting to die. Do you think the death penalty
is an appropriate punishment for throwing tomatoes?
And are people with guns to be regarded as blameless forces of nature
when they blow up at anyone they feel has slighted them? Is there
anything about going back to fetch a gun, returning to the scene,
challenging the kids to throw more tomatoes, and then opening fire on
them that does not sound like premeditation to you?

It is a bizarre ritual of the indigenous natives of Ohio, where
instead of taking food and sympathy to the deceased's family, one
stands around the open casket of the recently dead person and makes
inane statements such as, "Doesn't he look good," and the closest
relative is forced to tell the story of just how he died to each
newcomer.

They do that in NY too.

I didn't know how widespread the practice was. I've only attended
funerals locally. I find it distasteful and macabre. If anyone gets
the bright idea of displaying my dead body as a centerpiece, I'll come
back and get them.

I tried to *tell them it was a bad idea! But would they settle for a nice
floral arrangement for the table? Noooo, they had to have something
different...
