Evolution Proven At Caltech and Michigan |
Michigan may have lost the Rose Bowl, but they're winning where it
counts - in the science league!
The February _Discover_ magazine has a cover feature "Testing Darwin
Scientists at Michigan State Prove Evolution Works".
The article on page 22 is by Carl Zimmer (author of "At the Water's
Edge: Macroevolution and the Transformation of Life" and of "Evolution:
The Triumph of an Idea" which accompanied the PBS TV series on
evolution). It talks about a computer program called "Avida" which had
its roots at Caltech (http://dllab.caltech.edu/avida/).
The "life" in Avida works with numbers. In one experiment, researchers
set up an experiment to show how complexity can arise from evolution
and natural selection by seeing if Avida could evolve an "equals"
operation. "The chances that random mutations alone could produce it
are about one in a thousand trillion trillion". Avida did it in 23 out
of fifty trials, each one a different solution to the problem!
How does diversity occur in nature? In the Avida world numbers stand
in for food, and the program was run with an unlimited supply of this
food. The result would be that one organism would dominate - not what
we typically see in nature, except vaguely in a food-chain sort of way
(this same result occurred if food was really scarce).
The Avida team decided to make it more like nature - they restricted
the food supply without making it a complete famine, thereby increasing
competition. The result? Diversity! There ended up being not one
dominant organism. Instead, three or four different "species" would
emerge and coexist.
When the food supply was restricted, all fifty trials produced
organisms that could carry out the "equals" routine. Evolution works,
just like evolutionists have been saying it does since Darwin showed
the way.
A biologist at Michigan decided to introduce sexual reproduction into
Avida. It demonstrated that sex is an effective antidote to
annhilation from lethal mutations, but carries the price of non-lethal
yet harmful mutations lounging around the genome - just like in nature.
Out of sheer curiosity, the director of the Digital Evolution Lab
started to disallow beneficial mutations and see what would happen.
What he would do is run the "organisms" through a test to see if new
mutations were beneficial. if they were, he would "kill off" the
organism, expecting that this would stop digital evolution in its
tracks. It didn't.
The "organisms" began processing information innovatively and
reproducing more rapidly. It turns out that while Charles Offria was
testing them, they, too, were vetting him in return. They evolved a
way to recognize if they were being tested and if so, they played dead
to avoid actually being rendered dead!

What do you expect? The University of Texas just awarded its football
coach a 10 year, $25 million dollar contract. The same institution also
has cut back in recent years on periodical subscriptions, raised
existing student fees, created new student fees, and pushed throught the
state Legislature a bill allowing state universities to set their own
tuition rates.

I'd expect exactly that in George Bush's old state! No child left
behind? The reason for that is that all kids are held back!

Oh, Bud what can I do? I can't take this woman who keeps
changing her screen name. It's making me crazy and so upset.
How dare she do this to me? I have no control over her or
usenet. How can we stop her? How? Oh, woe is me. Is there a
way? She shouldn't be getting away with this. How does she get
away with it? Oh, sob, sniff. Woe is me. Soon, any day now
Jehovah will cleanse the earth of these wicked women and name
changers.

Here you will find clinical studies proving that the Jehovah's Witnesses
exhibit rates of mental illness between four and forty times the average
for the population at large:
