Examples of religious doublethink |
Happily, activity on this group seems to be picking up lately, so here's
another thread to keep things going:
In George Orwell's classic _1984_, "doublethink" is defined as the ability
to hold two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and to
accept both of them as true. I'm sure many of us have seen religious
believers employing this principle to good effect in their own lives. My
two all-time favorite examples of religious doublethink are:
-The Christian Science church near my apartment that has a wheelchair ramp.
(Christian Scientists are, of course, the sect founded by Mary Baker Eddy
that refuses all modern medicine and instead relies on the power of prayer
to heal all physical afflictions.)
-The "NetAccountability" software program marketed to Christians. This
product keeps an encrypted list of all the websites you visit on your
computer, impossible for you to view or modify, and periodically sends a
report to an "accountability partner" which you choose. The idea, of
course, is to prevent Christians from visiting pornographic or otherwise
"un-Christian" websites through the power of shame. Apparently, having the
infinite, all-powerful creator of the universe looking over your shoulder
just isn't enough to accomplish this, and some Christians need human beings
to help out.
What are your favorite examples of theistic doublethink? Sound off!

Gay men are all weak & effeminite, more woman than man, yet are
likely to overpower & rape any red-blooded boy, teen or young man
that crosses their path.
They're also all into leather. That, and they're all into cross-dressing.
They're always in your face, and they have a psychic power that enables
them to pick each other out. What do they call that? Oh yeah, "Gaydar."
We don't know who they are, but they can see each other.
And why do they have to broadcast their sexuality? I asked a gay guy that
once, when I was submitting my engagement announcement to the local
newspaper. The woman behind me, who was submitting her wedding
announcement, heard me ask him and she wanted to know too.
"We don't broadcast our sex lives," I told him, as I showed him a photo
of the engagement ring my girlfirend wears on her finger at all times so
that everyone will know that she's engaged.
SHEESH!

Consider also the celibacy aspect of religions, the main reason for
which is described in the novel.
The best example of doublethink would be the way religions deny facts
contradictory to their beliefs such as natural evolution, yet can
study and use the technology the same methedology leads to, for
practical reasons. "2 + 2 can equal 5, except when one is designing a
gun or tank, when they must always equal 4".

It is absolutely necessary that everything have a cause. God has no
cause. The best thing about that example is that it is used in the
same argument.

My favorite is still: Jesus loves you! Just not the way you are!
Thus he'll fry you eternally in hell.

of Christians.)

Dag, sounds like a real weiner. :-\

What are your favorite examples of theistic doublethink? Sound off!
1a: Godly men take healthy, thriving babies and toddlers from their
mother's arms and crush their heads with stones, and this is
considered merciful and just.
1b: Whores* decide to remove what amounts to a glob of pulsating
unaware cells from their uterus, and this is an act of the most
extreme and wicked selfishness.
* - A Christian word I suspect would be used. I don't consider a woman
a "*****" just because she likes sex. Even if she likes it a LOT.
2a: God can do anything.
2b: God can't even forgive you the most minor of transgressions
without slaughtering his own son or a red bull.
3a: (A lot of modern Christians, though not many of their ideological
ancestors): Women and children are more than just property.
3b: They believe in the story of Job and ascribe it to a just, loving
and merciful god.
4a: The universe is too complex to have come about without having been
created by their god.
4b: Their god, who is infinitely more complex than the universe,
wasn't created by anything.
5a: Jesus was 100% human and 100% "God".
5b: "God" can't sin, and humans can't _avoid_ sin.
6a: Bizzarre, cult-like behavior such as repetitious chants are used
to brainwash people into Satan's embrace.
6b: "My, but aren't these hymns lovely?"
7a: "If you spare the rod, you spoil the child."
7b: "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."
8a: Christ cast out demons with godly power. He was accused of casting
out devils by the power of the devil. He answered, stating something
to the effect of, "No house divided against itself can stand", stating
basically that casting out demons by the power of the Devil is
impossible.
8b: Non-Christians who do things like make charms to ward off evil
spirits are agents of Satan.
Gosh, and that's just off the top of my head. Who knows how many I
could come up with if I actually put a little _effort_ into it? :-?
