Change justice system, says Meet
A Deputy District Attorney's criticism of criminal justice system

Deputy District Attorney Mitr Sen Meet’s novels, especially
the recent ones like Kauravsabha have made a sharp
comment on the criminal justice system of the nation.
Of the five novels written by Meet, three focus on the
justice system, and are available in Punjabi too.
Coming from a person who is part of the state’s legal
system, a critical assessment of the system may seem
slightly odd. Meet does not think so. ‘‘My novels are a
comment on the justice system and not on the working
of any government. And yes, I vociferously say that our
justice system is almost a hundred years old and we have
done nothing to change it. Through my novels, I call for
a change,’’ explains Meet.
Apart from Kauravsabha, Meet’s novel titled Taftish
speaks of how the police investigates crime, and prepares
reports to be presented before the court. Another one
titled Katehra highlights how innocent persons get convicted
by the courts due to the evidence that is piled against them.
Kauravsabha speaks of how the guilty but clever persons
escape conviction by court. His next novel Sudharghar,
which is likely to be out soon, focuses on the so-called
reform process undertaken in Indian jails.
Kauravshabha has also been translated into Hindi by
Bhartiya Gyanpeeth. Talking about the need for such
books, Meet says, ‘‘Both Punjabi and Hindi do not have
much serious work on our justice system. I have researched
this subject for 20 years, and have seen it firsthand as
a lawyer too, so I had to write.’’
Meet says that our justice system relies heavily on oral
witnesses, which can be easily bought, lured or threatened
to retract. “My books are based on incidents which happen
in our court complexes every day: Of how police contrives
to change the crime, how the innocent can get convicted
because the evidence speaks against him, how the clever
can manipulate the law to evade punishment, and how the
so-called jail system which aims to reform the criminals,
instead makes them hardcore criminals.’’
