Extremist worked in NSW jails

A FORMER Sydney taxi driver with alleged links to some
of the most dangerous terrorist groups in the world was
allowed to work inside Sydney prisons with access to
militant inmates - by simply changing one letter in his name.
In an extraordinary admission yesterday, New South Wales
Premier Morris Iemma conceded that police checks had
failed to detect Islamic cleric Anwar Hisam Al Barq's
criminal history and alleged links to Arab terrorist groups.
Al Barq, who also holds Iraqi and Jordanian passports,
simply switched his name to Anwar El Barq to prevent
authorities uncovering his past. Al Barq also had a contract
to provide canteen services in a NSW school.
The Advertiser can also reveal a Corrective Services
intelligence report discloses that Islamic clerics have
allegedly been passing messages between inmates in
other NSW jails. The report does not name who the clerics
are but states that certain imams employed under the
chaplaincy service had been relaying messages. It is
understood there are 83 people employed under the
Chaplaincy Service, many of whom are volunteers.
Questions have now been raised about the Federal Department of Immigration, which
granted Al Barq citizenship last year after his U.S. resident permit was revoked.
Meanwhile, in Victoria, authorities are believed to be close to moving against up to
a dozen other Melbourne extremists who have been identified as possible security
threats.
It is believed police and security agencies have discussed whether the men may be
subjected to search warrants or questioned under new ASIO powers.
The men are not directly connected to terror raids conducted last week but are known
for their support of international jihad. They are followers of the fundamentalist
Wahhabism version of Islam.
A senior Islamic community source said between six and 12 men could be targeted.
