Object: Failure of Christianity To Alleviate Poverty
I love how repug idiots like Pat Buchanan are lyingly claiming
that the fact that some people in Louisiana are still poor proves that
The New Deal and the Great Society were a failure. First off, it could
just as easily prove that supply side trickle down economics and tax cut
policies are a failure, since we've been trying that for most of the last
25 years and it hasn't made the people in Louisiana any richer either.
It seems to be the case that there would always be poor
people, by some standard, at any given time, so actually the fact that
the people in Louisiana are poor doesn't necessarily say much of anything
about policies 40 or more years in the past.
Furthermore, Christianity, in particular, is supposed to help the
poor and the starving, but 2000 years later there are still poor and
starving people. So by the same "logic" that these right-wing theocrats
use against The Great Society and the so-called "Welfare State",
Christianity is a failure too. It hasn't alleviated poverty and it's had
over 50 times longer than the Great Society did to do it. In actual
fact, the Great Society concepts were barely tried before they were cut
to the bone and revised out of existence. So actually, xianity has had
well over 100 times longer to fix the poverty situation and it has
accomplished essentially nothing.
To the contrary, the poverty situation is worse than ever because
of religions like Christianity. Religions like Christ-insanity encourage
people to have large, unplanned families. They also suck away
significant amounts of household income in the form of tithes and other
donations which probably are a large reason that many kids don't have
enough food or clothing in Bible Belt Louisiana. Many of those poor
black people in Louisiana who still get their welfare checks march right
down the church and give away big portions to the minister. Jesus even
approved of this concept in Matthew 12:42-44 when he praised an old woman
who threw in all the money she had to live on. Of course Jesus also said
in Matt 26:11, "The poor you will always have with you". In fact his
corrupt system of religion and theocracy guarantees poverty for most of
its adherents.

Damn right. Those in the religion business are often drawn to the 'business'
solely to make money. (The so-called 'apostle,' Paul, certainly knew a good
business opportunity when he saw one.) And look who they prey upon the
most. Defenseless people - the extremely gullible and the poor. They suck
these people dry both mentally and financially. But what is equally
disgusting
is they take in all this money from the poor, then get on TV and show their
giant Glass Temple/Churches just filled with people who are decidedly *not*
impoverished. (I guess 'they' just wouldn't fit in.) Those are filled with
people
who *can* afford to pay the charlatans their money. And 'they' make the
Church 'look good,' don't they?
And I don't know about you, but I am constantly receiving e-mail spouting
that their company is 'Christian' this, that, or the other. I know that
*they*
aren't trying to capitalize on the *faith* of the poor and ignorant. Hah!

*****. The New Deal was instrumental in solving the massive problems
that lead to the Great Depression. That was a failure of market
capitalism which created many poor people.

They created and sustained the poor class.

You're far to stupid to think logically. By your assertion, before the
new deal there were no poor people. The New Deal and the Great Society
were a response to the fact that there already were plenty of poor people
created by unbridled capitalistic excesses, refuting your moronic
assertion. Many people have gotten out of poverty thanks to programs
including Social security, the GI bill and other New Deal programs.
Welfare programs have similiarly prevented many people from slipping
completely into poverty and has allowed single mothers to get educations
and better jobs, instead of having to work minimum wage jobs for decades
to support their children. Without these programs there would be many
times more poor people than there are today.
