False data found in abstinence program |
WASHINGTON - Many American youngsters participating in federally
funded, abstinence-only programs have been taught over the past
three years that abortion can lead to sterility and suicide, that
half the gay male teenagers in the United States have tested
positive for the AIDS virus, and that touching a person's genitals
"can result in pregnancy," a congressional staff analysis has
found.
Those and other assertions are examples of the "false, misleading
or distorted information" in the programs' teaching materials,
said the analysis released Wednesday, which reviewed the curricula
of more than a dozen popular projects aimed at preventing teenage
pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease.

"I have no objection talking about abstinence as a sure-fire way
to prevent unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases,"
Waxman said. But "I don't think we ought to lie to our children
about science. Something is seriously wrong when federal tax
dollars are being used to mislead kids about basic health facts."

Well, if the person is of the opposite sex, and you (didn't wash your
hands after/don't wash your hands before) masturbating, if you are
(male/female), I suppose it's remotely possible. As for abortion leading
to sterility and suicide, those risks do exist, even if they are small.
Those opposed to the old style of sex education have their own set of
horror stories about the SIECUS curriculum materials.
I happened to see "Crossfire" on CNN today about this. Since everyone
was talking at once, Jerry Falwell managed to look superficially
reasonable. But even Patricia Ireland failed to stick to her guns in one
important area.
Yes, we should be teaching schoolchildren, both in junior high and in
high school, that it is inappropriate for them to be sexually active.
Yes, we should be teaching that adultery is wrong, and that the
appropriate place for sexual activity is in a stable, committed
relationship.
But if we go further than that, and say that sex belongs within
marriage, we are talking about a *religious ritual*, and have just
violated the First Amendment.
That a representative of the U.S. Government must diminish our respect
for George W. Bush by claiming that the previous non-abstinence-only sex
education programs, instead of social and cultural changes, are
responsible for higher rates of STDs even when broader use of
contraception reduced teenage pregnancies, was also unfortunate.

Remote doesn;t even describe the possibility. Sperm are very fragile and the
requirements for pregnancy are so strict that the possibilty is extremely
close to zero.
Sterility is a hot issue. You know, I just did a google search on it. There
are literally hundreds of anti-abortion sites hyping the risk of sterility
using numbers from 2% to more than 10% of women who got an abortion becoming
sterile . Some even "quote" journaled articles. But a closer look showed
that most of the quoted articles were written in the '80s. One article cites
a 1993 study, claiming 75% of women have complication that reduce the
psossibilit of future pregnancies - but they neglect to mention that these
are short term problems.
The reality is that sterility is a potential, though a small potential,
problem that increases in possibility for mid-term and late-term abortions.
It is hardly the problem that abstinence programs and right-to-lifers state
it is.
Not to mention thea bsolute absurdity that half of the gay teens in the US
are confirmed to be HIV+
Face it. There is a political agenda being met, and the health of our
children is secondary to the advancement of that agenda.

Except you have to compare suicide rate between people who have
abortion and people who don't, (controlling for all the other
socio-economic factors) in order to say anything meaningful. After
all, a small percent of people who are left handed also commit
suicide.

I believe there was a study, a few years back, that showed that women who
had abortions were more likely to be victims of murder than women who
didn't. I believe they factored in socio-economic status, but I don't
recall what the conclusion was.
