I have no Brown's in my lineage. You can take me off your list. It may be
easier to proceed through elimination. Oh...and take off my brother and
sister, their kids, and my parents...there that's 10 people you can strike!

I have news for you. There are a lot more names in your family tree than
"Brown?. (Unless your one of those families without branches in the
family tree.)

Fewer than four grandparents maybe?

Well, since "Brown" is the fifth most common name in the US (according
the the 1990 US Census), you'll find lots of them. I do genealogy as a
hobby, if you want a hand, send me an email. Just remove the
"spamenot." from the "reply to" address.

You've got a major task following the Brown family tree. It must be one of the
commonest surnames and Brown, Browne, Braun, Brun, Bruin and all the other
European variations must number in the millions.
Presumably the name originated in the middle ages and (most probably) referred
to hair colour to distinguish various individuals in a community - village, town
or manor - with the same first, or Christian, name. For example a tall John
would be John the long (John Long), a John whose father was called Simon would
be John, Simon's son (John Simpson), a John who worked with wood would be John
the carpenter (John Carpenter, Jean Charpentier, Hans Tischler) orJohn the wood
(John Wood, Jean Bois, Johann Holz)
Good luck, but I'm afraid Brown is second only to Smith in numbers of people
with the surname.
If you are catholic and your family have lived in the same area for a number of
years, I would try church records.
It is exceedingly unlikely, although not iimpossible, that you have ancestors in
the US, however, it is very likely that you have cousins in the US and it may be
more fruitful for you to pursue that line.
In future, if you are posting here about non-atheist issues, could you please
put OT:(for Off Topic) in the subject header before the subject. This is usenet
"netiquette" and allows users to skip irrelevant posts.

Get thee hence to ancestry.com. I found tons of stuff there, among which was a
family tree dating back over 200 years.
