Zhao Ziyang is dead and buried, but the memory of Tiananmen Square
remains very much alive

It took 12 days of hard bargaining, but today there will at last be a
funeral at Babaoshan, the cemetery for China's senior leaders, for the
disgraced Zhao Ziyang who died on January 17. Family and friends will
be permitted to attend and, after days of confrontation, it is
reportedly agreed that the Communist party's negative assessment of
Zhao Ziyang's life will not be rammed down the throats of his grieving
circle until after the funeral. Even in death, Zhao, the man disgraced
for trying to save the students in Tiananmen Square in 1989, offers a
reproach to Beijing's ruling elite.
