Favourite Treatise on Atheist Morality? |
They needn't be emphatically atheist, just without any basis in "God's
will".
And why is it your favourite?
Thank you.

Trimming the post you're replying to is nice, but could you leave at
least a *little* context?

It's wasn't a reply. Sorry for being unclear. Try this on for size:
What is your favourite treatise on atheist morality? Anything not
based on god(s). Why is it your favourite?

The same as the one on green paint morality. Atheism is about lacking
a particular belief - there are as many moral systems in atheism as
there are in coffee drinking.

Fair enough, but do you have a favourite one that has been written
about in detail?

"Moral system" is almost invariably an oxymoron. A moral system is as
moral as a moral majority.

LOL! I can't tell who is the green paint moralist here, but I know a number
of people who can become quite emotional over the correct shade and brand of
green, red, or orange paint. So, may we assume you're a John Deere man?

_I and Thou_ by Martin Buber (definitely not an atheist, but his
arguments and analysis do not depend on his or your belief in any
g(G)od(s) ), because it seems to lay out a notion of morality and
moral understanding and humanity and psychology that matches what I
see in the world and what I feel. Simply put, immorality comes from
seeing people as "the other". But read the book.

Why does morality have to be based on ancient mythology? Because you say
so? Does common sense not work for you? No wonder the majority of
prison inmates are Christians believing they will be saved, regardless of
the crimes they have committed against humaniy, as opposed to the crimes
their imaginary Jebus has absolved them of because they have proclaimed
they believe in "him".
Belief does not make one moral. Conduct does.

I think David Bezerkowitz ("Son of Sam") was given an interview recently, having
become some sort of repentant Christian. Amazing what the press sucks up.

Why does morality have to be based on ancient mythology?
It doesn't. I know there are atheist morality treatises, I was just
asking what people's favourites are.
I must say I looked over the original post and can't see why you would
think it was insincere or rhetorical; but for the record: I'm not a
theist trying to imply that atheists can't be moral, I'm an atheist
interested in moral theory.
Because you say so?
Does common sense not work for you?
I find that people have vastly different ideas of "common-sense",
which is why it's good to see ideas being explored explicitly and in
detail.
I'd be interested to know, though, your idea of a common-sense
morality. Can you be more specific?

One could argue that belief influences conduct quite a bit.
