VIEWPOINTS - Federal marriage amendment should reflect 'biblical

The man gets concubines, and the woman must be a virgin - or else

Last spring, the Presidential Prayer Team wrote, "Pray for the
ongoing effort to strengthen our nation by creating and passing a
constitutional amendment codifying marriage as being only between a man and
a woman. Pray that godly values will be honored." As a former president of
my synagogue and a 10-year board member of the Union for Reform Judaism, I
commend the prayer team for urging us to return to biblical values as we
craft an amendment to the Constitution.
But the proposed federal marriage amendment doesn't go far
enough to return us to the biblical values our forefathers embraced. Here is
the amendment I propose, which surely will be met with broad, bipartisan
support. (Biblical citations follow each item.)
Article 1: Marriage in the United States shall consist of a
union between one man and one or more women. (Gen. 29:17-28; II Sam. 3:2-5)
Article 2: Marriage shall not interfere with a man's right to
take concubines. (II Sam 5:13; I Kings 11:3; II Chron 11:21)
Article 3: The marriage shall be considered valid only if the
woman is a virgin. If proven not to be a virgin, the woman shall be stoned
to death. (Deut 22:13-21)
Article 4: Marriage of a believer and a non-believer shall be
forbidden. (Gen. 24:3; Num. 25:1-9; Ezra 9:12; Neh 10:30)
Article 5: If a married man dies without children, his brother
shall marry the widow. If he refuses or deliberately denies her children,
his fine is one shoe. (Gen. 38:6-10; Deut 25:5-10)
Many supporters of the federal marriage amendment believe
marriage is a way to ensure procreation. Therefore, I propose that temporary
marriage licenses be issued that expire within five years. If the couple has
not procreated within five years, a permanent license shall not be issued.

That's right. If she doesn't like it then she shouldn't have chosen to
be born a woman ... or something :)

"It is fashionable to wax apocalyptic about the
threat to humanity posed by the AIDS virus, 'mad cow'
disease, and many others, but I think a case can be
made that faith is one of the world's great evils,
comparable to the smallpox virus but harder to
eradicate." -- Richard Dawkins
