Fellow atheists: Stop calling it "Xianity" |
It's not funny. It's not clever. It's makes you sound stupid, spiteful,
ideological, and childesh.
And it's not even offensive to Christians:
http://www.snopes.com/holidays/christmas/xmasabbr.asp
"The X abbreviation of 'Xmas' for 'Christmas' is neither modern nor
disrespectful. The notion that it is a new and vulgar representation of
the word 'Christmas' seems to stem from the erroneous belief that the
letter 'X' is used to stand for the word 'Christ' because of its
resemblance to a cross, or that the abbreviation was deliberately
concocted "to take the 'Christ' out of Christmas." Actually, this usage
is nearly as old as Christianity itself, and its origins lie in the
fact that the first letter in the Greek word for 'Christ' is 'chi,' and
the Greek letter 'chi' is represented by a symbol similar to the letter
'X' in the modern Roman alphabet. Hence 'Xmas' is indeed perfectly
legitimate abbreviation for the word 'Christmas' (just as 'Xian' is
also sometimes used as an abbreviation of the word 'Christian').
None of this means that Christians (and others) aren't justified in
feeling slighted when people write 'Xmas' rather than 'Christmas,' but
the point is that the abbreviation was not created specifically for the
purpose of demeaning Christ, Christians, Christianity, or Christmas --
it's a very old artifact of a very different language."
Even if something is perfectly correct usage, grammer, spelling, if
you're using it for the purpose of offending, you are being
ill-mannered.

Well, obviously because it's a perfectly legitimate abbreviation that's

Heh. The most amusing thing is that given it's a perfectly legitimate
abbreviation with a well documented history and Christian origin, they
are in fact being offended by their own ignorance, which is both
fitting and ironic!

As did the Obergruppenfuehrer, and while I fully appreciate that you
may have some difficulty understanding the moral implications of
accepting such offers, I also can't but help feel that you need to try
a little harder.
In an effort to help stimulate whatever passes for your moral
imagination, let me make it plain for you: to accept the offer is to
be complicit with and to collude with the imposition of unending
suffering upon some people - it is to say "yep, some people will spend
most of eternity screaming whatever passes for their lungs out in a
state of agony beyond comprehension much less description, and that's
just fine with me, as long as I don't, and in fact, I rejoice in the
fact that they do".

Well, as a woodie that you are, I can understand your difficulty in

Ah, yes, thank you for proving my point. Your attempted insult shows very
clearly what xianity (and you) stand for.
Remember, you are invited. Will you accept?
The price of admission is too high. I wouldn't want to become a

Interesting belief you have there. Good thing he is omnipresent. So

I'd prefer feta cheese, please.
