You know, Fred, for once you're not far off the mark. FEMA had
search-and-rescue specialists sitting on their asses in Atlanta,
getting training on how to hand out fliers telling people that FEMA was
great, while victims were drowning in New Orleans.
I agree: truth is stranger than fiction, and Republicans beat them
both.
*****
As New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin pleaded on national television for
firefighters - his own are exhausted after working around the clock for
a week - a battalion of highly trained men and women sat idle Sunday in
a muggy Sheraton Hotel conference room in Atlanta.
Many of the firefighters, assembled from Utah and throughout the
United States by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, thought they
were going to be deployed as emergency workers.
Instead, they have learned they are going to be community-relations
officers for FEMA, shuffled throughout the Gulf Coast region to
disseminate fliers and a phone number: 1-800-621-FEMA.

Or how about the firefighters who did such important work escorting
Bush around? They could have been doing real work:
"...a team of 50 Monday morning quickly was ushered onto a flight
headed for Louisiana. The crew's first assignment: to stand beside
President Bush as he tours devastated areas."

If FEMA *didn't* put people through registration and sensitivity classes
they'd be pilloried the first time some rescuer "inappropriately"
touched one of those drowning victims.

I agree: truth is stranger than fiction, and Republicans beat them
both.

Bureaucrats are bureaucrats, regardless of party.

Could you let us know how often that's happened?
Go on. I say you're full of your usual *****, but if you want
to pretend that you're basing this on something, you go
right ahead and post a URL.
Well, chicken *****?

They weren't "sensitivity classes". They had those rescue workers
handing out leaflets. It was a job a bunch of high-school kids could
have done. It was a waste of time, energy, and talent- talent that in
some cases was ready to travel 2000 miles to help, only to be diverted
to Atlanta to do makework.

I agree: truth is stranger than fiction, and Republicans beat them

Oh, Fred- shame on you. This is just what the administration does- when
it sees something it doesn't like, it erases it, as though that will
make it go away...let's see, what was it that was in that unmarked
snip? Oh, yeah, a link to the newspaper article, and one other quote
about how FEMA put those 50 trained rescue workers to use:
http://www.sltrib.com/utah/ci_3004197
Or how about the firefighters who did such important work escorting
Bush around? They could have been doing real work:
"...a team of 50 Monday morning quickly was ushered onto a flight

Ignoring it won't make it go away. I suppose they felt honored to stand
there with the Pres while they drove past people they could have been
helping.

They weren't "sensitivity classes".

They really do those, you know.

I suppose democrat bureaucrats are models of efficiency? Like the ones
in the Louisiana Levee Board who are under indictment?

Just an attempt to divert attention from the way FEMA screwed the
pooch.
Won't wash.

Only a Bush supporter would consider the citation showing the factual
basis of someone's position to be irrelevent. There's that darn
"reality-based" bias again, huh?
Oh, and the issue was what FEMA had rescue workers doing...the National
Review article tries to imply that it's silly to have rescue workers
take "sensitivity classes" (your phrase). In fact, the truth is even
crazier than that- FEMA had rescue workers posing with Bush on a photo
op when they could have been rescuing people. And- is the National
Review article right? Did FEMA also have rescue workers in sensitivity
training while they could have been helping in New Orleans? I share
your outrage. It's a travesty, and it just shows how incompetent this
administration really is. Thanks for bringing that article to our
attention, Fred.
