Female Muslim medics 'disobey hygiene rules' |
I just came across an article in the Daily Telegraph entitled "Female
Muslim medics 'disobey hygiene rules'"
via Richard Dawkins' site [http://richarddawkins.net/article,2213,n,n]
"Muslim medical students are refusing to obey hygiene rules brought in
to stop the spread of deadly superbugs, because they say it is against
their religion.
Women training in several hospitals in England have raised objections to
removing their arm coverings in theatre and to rolling up their sleeves
when washing their hands, because it is regarded as immodest in Islam."
I know the Torygraph can be sensationalist at times, but if this is in
any way true those of us in the UK need to start making a stand against
the 'rights' of the religiously blinkered encroaching on the rest of us.

If religion is true, then it is far more important than anything
(including your stupid human "hygiene rules").
If religion is not true, then it should be discarded.
Therefore, the position you seem to be advocating (that they be allowed
to continue to be practicing Muslims - but yet be expected to follow the
hygiene rules) cannot possibly be right.

What??? Stupid human hygiene rules? I'll bet you wouldn't even dream of
making such a crass comment if you developed an MRSA or a Clostridium
Difficile infection in hospital as a result of a bunch of misguided
idiots not following "stupid human hygiene rules".
If religion is not true, then it should be discarded.

No, my position is that if they want to worship their own sky-fairy fair
enough; when worship of said sky-fairy impacts on the health of everyone
else then a line must be drawn.

Those "stupid human hygiene rules", have saved millions of lives over
the years.
They are the rules that allow surgeons to open a human body, and close
it up again, without it becoming infected.
They are the rules, without which, our medical success would be no
better than it was a thousand years ago, in spite of our advanced
knowledge, and technology.

A possible compromise--let them continue both in the training and the faith, but
practicing only on Muslim patients. After they get their degrees, enforce their
emigration to their country of ethnic origin, where they can help bring the
population down to manageable levels.

I nice solution, but that won't work, as MRSA does not confine itself to
only Muslim patients once on the ward.
They've agreed to become doctors here and knew the rules before doing so. We
pay for their training. If they won't follow our rules then send them home
without any qualification and bill their country for the cost of their
training and compensation for those that missed out on a place in medical
school because their place was taken by someone who would not follow the
rules. What would you do to someone who voluntarily joined the army and then
refused to fight in a war because they were a consciencious objector?

That was true in my case, and is true for CO's in the more common case=20
of being motivated by received religious training, so that one is fully
aware of the objection in advance. But you are quite mistaken to assert
*either* that persons do not legitimately come to a state of conscientious

Any reason not to discharge these idiots? Any nurse, doctor or med
technician in training who refuses to follow sanitary rules should be
dumped the second they breech the rules. This isn't a matter of
religious freedom. They're free to belong to any bizarre cult they
choose, but they're not free to endanger patients.
