Idaho Legislator Fights for God's Law
Among those who think that America would be better off if it were
transformed into some sort of theocratic state where certain religions and
religious beliefs are given endorsement and support by the government
while others are ignored or discriminated against are people who should no
better: elected representatives. They serve because of the democratic
process, but they deliberately seek to undermine it.
One of those is Idaho State Senator Gerry Sweet, as the Idaho Statesman
reports:
This isn't a religious issue. The issue is about where our laws come from
and who is the great legislator of the universe, which the Idaho
Constitution points out is Almighty God, Gerry Sweet said Friday. Its
becoming more and more critical to stand up and defend our Judeo-Christian
heritage.
It's rare that you find someone contradicting themselves so quickly and
obviously. It's not a "religious issue," but it is critical for the
American government to defend "Judeo-Christian" beliefs.
Ummmm.... aren't Judeo-Christian beliefs.... religious?

Nope. True Believers have Truth, not religion. Senator Sweet's comments are,
as far as fanatics are concerned, not at all contradictory.

Why bother to quote someone whose comments you have snipped?
Inquiring minds want to know.

"slimy politician". Isn't that just a little bit redundant?

In a message sent 'round the world, Carol Lee Smith poured fuel on the
fire with the following:

It looks like a case of theists doing what they most enjoy, namely
playing word games.
In this case the argument hinges on the distinction between religion and
heritage. The senator is basically saying "Hey, you don't have to
worship our god. You just have to acknowledge our god as the source of
our laws. Our basic beliefs have been around a long time (and thus
deserve respect)." In simpler terms the message is: Believe whatever you
want, as long as you acknowledge that we are right.

There's a difference between religion - making one sect the official
one of the nation - and heritage - acknowledging that the US is a
Judeo/Christian (minus the Jews) nation.
