The Australian Thylacine (Thylacinus cynocephalus -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thylacine) became extinct in the 1930's
(driven there by human hunting), but not before film and photos were
taken of captive specimens.
It's been in the news recently with talk of cloning it from preserved
