First US gay couple to marry have broken up
The Times ^ | 7/23/06 | James Bone
Posted on 07/22/2006 11:17:30 PM PDT by XR7
THE lesbian couple who pioneered gay marriage in America have split up,
saying that their marital troubles show that they are no different from
heterosexual partners.
Julie and Hillary Goodridge led the legal battle that forced
Massachusetts to become the first state in the US to allow same-sex
marriage. The two, who met 21 years ago at a Harvard University course
on disinvestment in South Africa, became the public face of a loving,
financially stable, committed same-sex couple.
As lead plaintiffs in the landmark case, they were featured in People
magazine. Julie, 49, is president of an investment advisory firm, and
Hillary, 50, is a grants manager for the Unitarian Universalist
Association. The pair went to court after a hospital refused to allow
Hillary to see Julie when she suffered complications during the birth
of their daughter, now 10.
They wed in Boston on May 17, 2004, the first day of legal gay marriage
in America. "Next to the birth of our daughter, Annie, this is the
happiest day of our lives," Julie said. Two years later, however, the
couple have broken up. "Julie and Hillary Goodridge are amicably
living apart," Mary Breslauer, a spokeswoman, said.
A survey undertaken by the Boston Globe indicated that about 7,300
same-sex couples have obtained licences since gay marriage was
legalised in Massachusetts, and about 45 have divorced. The news of the
break-up comes as gay rights activists have suffered a series of
setbacks in their campaign for same-sex marriage.

Well, let's see...
Last year I can find info on is 2001 and for that year there were about
2.2 million divorces. Which is roughly one every 14 seconds. Oops, there's
one now! Wait, there's another divorce! There went another one...

Speaking of things they'd rather not talk about, Massachusetts--the only
state that has gay marriage--has the lowest divorce rate in the nation.
So if you wanna defend marriage, it appears you need gay marriage...

Isn't Gingrich the one that had his dying wife served in the hospital?

Apparently in the recent debate over the federal marriage amendment,
one of the congress-critters made a speech in which he said if they
really wanted to protect marriage, they should ban divorce. He was
roundly criticized in the press by the GOP congress-critters.
Which makes sense since picking on gays energizes the GOP base... but
dealing with reality does not!

To be fair, you should actually compare the divorce rate for straight
couples who were married no longer than the 45 gay couples who broke
up - same-sex marriage only recently became legal anywhere in the U.S.
A fairer comparision would be to the fraction of straight couples who
divorced after a year or two of being married: you won't find any
gay couples in the U.S. who divorced after being married for 10 years
because none can be legally be married for that long, yet you can
find straight couples who divorced after being married that long.
I've no idea what the number actually is with that criteria, but it
would be a fairer one to use in a discussion.

No, it's not required. If it where you would have asked the queer who
posted the het divorce stat to provide one. Everyone gets to play by
the same rules, Jenn.
Yes, it is required, particularly when the claim is outrageous. You
don't just get to make up numbers. BTW, Jenn isn't in this discussion
(of course, we all know that you are the "Bill Taylor" clone trying to
cover up his multiple identities by accusing others of doing what you
do).
There were 45 "gay" divorces out of 7500 "gay" marriages in Mass. See
<http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2006/07/21/after_2_years_same_sex_marriage_icons_split_up/>
The divorce rate for straight couples in Massachusetts is 2.4 per
thousand marriages. See
<http://www.boston.com/news/globe/editorial_opinion/oped/articles/2004/10/31/walking_the_walk_on_family_values/>
<http://www.divorcereform.org/94staterates.html> has the rates broken
down by state (4.6 per thousand marriages is the U.S. average).
<http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/95facts/fs_439s.htm> shows similar
number (4.6 per thousand for the U.S. average, and 2.7 per 1000 for
the state of Massachusetts, but this CDC page contains statistics for
1995, and the rate changes over time).
So, why don't you produce some data backing up your statements? My
guess is that it is because you don't have any and just made up your
numbers.

No, it's not required. If it where you would have asked the queer who

Note how the troll snipped the stats I provided (which are embarassing
to him since he has nothing to back up his statements):
There were 45 "gay" divorces out of 7500 "gay" marriages in Mass. See
<http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2006/07/21/after_2_years_same_sex_marriage_icons_split_up/>
The divorce rate for straight couples in Massachusetts is 2.4 per
thousand marriages. See
<http://www.boston.com/news/globe/editorial_opinion/oped/articles/2004/10/31/walking_the_walk_on_family_values/>
<http://www.divorcereform.org/94staterates.html> has the rates broken
down by state (4.6 per thousand marriages is the U.S. average).
<http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/95facts/fs_439s.htm> shows similar
number (4.6 per thousand for the U.S. average, and 2.7 per 1000 for
the state of Massachusetts, but this CDC page contains statistics for
1995, and the rate changes over time).
