A plot to extort money from a family by kidnapping a McFarland woman
backfired badly on the kidnappers.
Sheriff's Senior Deputy Vince Martinez discusses the arrests of
several men Tuesday in connection with a kidnapping for ransom plot.
Money and drugs recovered from the arrests lie on a table in front of
him.
Juan C. Baez, 23; Jose R. Cabral, 20; Andreas M. Martinez, 19; and
Jesus M. Lazcano, 18, were arrested Tuesday on suspicion of kidnapping
for ransom, carjacking, conspiracy, extortion, rape with a foreign
object and sexual battery, sheriff's Senior Deputy Vince Martinez
said. A fifth man, Ayon Inez, was arrested on drug charges but isn't
believed to be directly involved with the kidnapping.
The Sheriff's Department received a report on Nov. 26 that a 24-year-
old woman had been kidnapped. The woman had been forced off the road
in the area of Sherwood and Mount Arbor avenues in McFarland and was
taken from her vehicle, Martinez said at a news conference held
Tuesday at the department's McFarland substation.
The woman was held in a remote area east of McFarland for seven hours
and the kidnappers demanded $60,000 for her return, Martinez said. She
was sexually assaulted while held captive.
The family of the victim couldn't come up with the money and
arrangements were made for the family to pay $30,000 in a week. The
woman was released and the kidnappers threatened to take another
family member if the money wasn't paid.
"We're not sure why this family was targeted," Martinez said.
Deputies learned on Monday that the family had arranged to pay the
kidnappers $20,000. When contacted by law enforcement, the family
asked that they not get involved because they feared retaliation.
The family later contacted law enforcement and asked for help and a
money drop was arranged in a rural area east of Delano, Martinez said.
The money was picked up by the suspects and they were tracked to the
31900 block of Ninth Avenue in Delano.
A search warrant was served at the residence and Lazcano was arrested.
The case the money was in and the vehicle the victim was held in were
found at that location, Martinez said.
Search warrants were then served in the 1600 and 300 blocks of Garces
Highway in Delano, leading to the recovery of the money and the
arrests of Baez and Martinez, according to Deputy Martinez. Another
search warrant was served in the 50 block of Third Street, and Cabral
and Inez were arrested.
The arrests were made Monday evening and Tuesday morning and
undercover detectives worked about 40 hours straight to make sure the
operation was successful, Martinez said.
The four men suspected in the kidnapping were being held at the
downtown jail on at least $1 million bail each and were scheduled to
be arraigned on Thursday, according to the Sheriff's Department Web
site.

Charges were filed Thursday against five men accused of kidnapping a
McFarland woman for ransom.
Juan Baez, 23, Jose Cabral, 20, Andreas Martinez, 19, Jesus Lazcano,
18, and Gabriel Astorga, 18, pleaded not guilty at their arraignment
to charges of kidnapping for ransom, conspiracy to commit a crime,
carjacking, sexual penetration with a foreign object, sexual battery
and extortion, according to the Kern County Superior Court Web site.
The men are accused of kidnapping a 24-year-old woman on Nov. 26 and
demanding $60,000 for her return. They sexually assaulted her before
letting her go after several hours in captivity, Kern County Sheriff's
Department reports said.
The family couldn't come up with that much money and the kidnappers
agreed to $30,000 in a week. If payment wasn't made, another family
member would be kidnapped, deputies said.
Law enforcement got involved and the family arranged a money drop in a
rural area east of Delano on Monday, deputies said. The money was
picked up by the men and was tracked to a residence in Delano.
Search warrants were served at that residence and several other Delano
homes and the kidnappers were taken into custody and the money
recovered, deputies said. Baez, Cabral, Martinez and Lazcano have
declined the newspaper's interview requests.
Another man, Inez Ayon, was arrested with the men and charged with
possession of cocaine for sales. Cabral also faces that charge.
Each of the men required an English interpreter at their arraignment.
They sat motionless with the exception of Cabral, who bounced his legs
and moved his fingers through much of the proceedings.
A preliminary hearing for the alleged kidnappers has been scheduled
for Dec. 20. They are being held without bail.
