Flesh and the Devil |
It's good to see another trenchant documentary on religion on Channel 4.
The brown-nosing the BBC gave the Church of England recently was
thoroughly disgusting.
Flesh and the Devil explored the effects of enforced celibacy in
religions such as Catholicism and Hinduism. Again, a rundown is here:

It was interesting to see the connection between primal biological
sexual urges and the way religions pervert it for its own ends. With no
sexual outlet, the body's energy and drive for sex manifests itself in
different ways. One of the ways religion seeks to channel this energy is
into spiritual visions and ecstasy; essentially having orgasms for God.
Also:
"Pain makes the body produce opiates which can lead to ecstatic states.
Sexual psychologist Dorothy Hayden sees a clear connection between
Christianity and sado-masochistic sex. Both require a reduction in the
ego – submission, either to God or a sexual dominator, a surrender of
the self, total trust and a willingness to lose control."
I still think religion is a contemptible organisation, inflicting
horrors of every severity and shade on humanity in its noble and
spiritual search for power and control. But for now at least, I won't be
so quick to anger, and I can even feel a little pity for both the lay
and the clergy (I daresay) without feeling arrogant; the poor sods
really have had their minds fucked with.
It had a lot of American pundits and seemed to have been made in
conjunction with HBO, so perhaps it'll appear abroad soon? For what it's
worth, I highly recommend it.

SEXUALITY COMES TO THE CATHOLIC
CHURCH

Those who choose to become priests often do so because they are pedophiles
or sexual deviants. Suppressing one's sexuality is deviant. Does a priest
ever get an erection, and what are their fantasies that cause their
erection? Are priests asexual men? How can they give council to those who
are sexual? Do priests ever masturbate?
There are priests who are homosexual and hide this fact from their parents.
They never have to explain or justify why they are not married. Some young
men join the priesthood because they are very naive sexually and are not in
touch with their feelings. These young men are often late bloomers with
what is called "raging teenage hormones."
Some men become priests to live vicariously through penitents' sexual
confessions. There are those men who discover sex after they are priests.
With the Catholic Church's negative position of anti-pleasure from sex, it
is understandable that many priests' sexuality will be acted out. This
sexual acting out has been going on since celibacy was demanded of priests;
and I am certain that even before celibacy priests still used their
positions of power for their sexual gratification.
