Florida city council members walk out during atheist's invocation |
Three members of the city council of Tampa actually got up and walked
out on an atheist who invited by a Jewish member of the council to
give the morning invocation. Such an open act of disrespect shocks
me, although it really shouldn't, given the current political
environment in the US.

[Excerpt]
Even before Harvey spoke, White was pushing to cancel the invocation.
These are sacred moments that refer to a supreme being, White said,
and this speaker doesn't believe in God.
"We have never had people of an atheist group represent Americans,"
White said. "And I don't think it is appropriate in this setting."
White's motion to cancel the invocation failed 2-4, supported only by
him and Alvarez, who called White "very brave" for making the effort.
"I just can't sit here and listen to someone that does not believe in
a supreme being," Alvarez said.
....
Mayor Pam Iorio, who did not attend the council meeting, said later
the invocation should be reserved for speakers who invoke God.
"I certainly don't agree with having an atheist come for the
invocation,'' she said. ``I think the invocation is a time for the
council to start their day with an expression of faith."

"The condition of alienation, of being asleep, of being unconscious,
of being out of one's mind, is the condition of the normal man. Society
highly values its normal man.It educates children to lose themselves
and to become absurd, and thus to be normal. Normal men have killed
perhaps 100,000,000 of their fellow normal men in the last fifty years."

One of the things that struck me was the probability that if the man
hadn't been known to be atheist, his comments would likely have been
received as some sort of new agey expression of good will toward
humanity, even if no god was mentioned.

-The ability to change one's mind, ideas, and opinions when confronted with
new facts is the sign of the rational and intelligent. The inability to do
so is the hallmark of the dimwitted and the fanatic. This applies not only
to science and philosophy, but also to politics.-

political environment in the US.

[Excerpt]
Even before Harvey spoke, White was pushing to cancel the
invocation.
These are sacred moments that refer to a supreme being,
White said,
and this speaker doesn't believe in God.
"We have never had people of an atheist group represent
Americans,"
White said. "And I don't think it is appropriate in this
setting."
White's motion to cancel the invocation failed 2-4,
supported only by
him and Alvarez, who called White "very brave" for making
the effort.
"I just can't sit here and listen to someone that does not
believe in
a supreme being," Alvarez said.
...
Mayor Pam Iorio, who did not attend the council meeting,
said later
the invocation should be reserved for speakers who invoke
God.
"I certainly don't agree with having an atheist come for
the invocation,'' she said. ``I think the invocation is a
time for the council to start their day with an expression
of faith."
Obviously, thinking isn't something they're capable of.
Typical
Christian mindless bigotry and prejudice. How pathetic.
Silly sheep, each following the other. Or perhaps they are
more like
lemmings. Each follows the other over the cliff because none
is
capable of giving a thought as to what they are doing, or
why they are doing it.
I can't help but laugh at them.
I'd think it funny except for the fact that they want to make
lemmings out of the rest of us too.
Many want an old-tyme auto-da-fe. :\ I don't mind as long as
they are at the centre of the festivities.
Of course they would like to barbecue those who don' t agree with
them, but I hope that they realize that in another time and place,
many of them would have been the 'center of festivities'.
That's what I indicated-they are the ones "smokin'".
Most don't. You see all that stuff happens to others, not 'good
xtians'
like them. They think the world revolves around them.
The problem is that they all think that they are 'good' xtians.
Of course. Such does indicate the word 'good' is effectively
meaningless.
