Object: Fred Phelps Planned to Demonstrate at Funerals of Amish Schoolgirls
He was going to do this because he's angry at
Governor Rendell. Someone offered Phelps an
hour of free radio time if he wouldn't do this.
Phelps accepted.
I just heard this on the Tucker Carlson Show.
Tucker said that Phelps should not have been
offered the free air time. I disagree. This way
lots more people will find out what a sick whack
job Phelps is. And, the families of the murdered
children will have a little peace.

How low can he sink?
They mocked the deaths of those children.

He obviously hit bottom with this one. A turd that somehow figured out

you know, someone really needs to meet him one dark night with a

What's going to happen when one of his kids dies? Is he going to blame
THAT on gays and protest at his own son's funeral?

Some of his kids did leave him years ago. He never
forgave them for not wanting to be brainwashed.
All of his 'kids' are lawyers, since Phelps own license
to practice law was taken away from him.

Yeah, they could all gather around and forgive him.
The Amish aren't big on violent responses. That's probably part of the
reason the gunman chose an Amish school in the first place.

I am a liberal, and I see limits to free speech.
Phelps and his followers butt very hard up against those limits,
spewing sectarian hate and intolerance at the most inopportune times
and inappropriate venues. It's arguable that they have a constitutional
right to do so, just as the KKK could hold rallies in Selma and the ANP
could march in Skokee. This does not make what they do right, nor
defensible, by anyone, no matter how liberal.
Even so, as far as I can tell, Mickey does not say that Phelps has no
legal right to do what he does, only that she thought the outcome was
better than the alternative. And I agree with her. Phelps can have all
the free speech he wants on the radio, where we are free to switch it
off or listen to something else. As far as I'm concerned, his free
speech rights end where my ears begin.

I am a liberal, and I see limits to free speech.

So do I, but not in this case. Like you say below,
people can always turn off their radios. They can
also change to another station. Of course, lots of
people will probably listen out of curiosity and be
totally horrified by what the Phelps monster spews.
I don't even want to think about the two or three
stupid enough to agree with him.

The "We" are those of us who once identified ourselves as socially and
politically liberal.
The creatures out there today who shout down speakers, denying those
who came to hear them the right to do so are anything but liberal.
Neither are the ones who demand that certain words, phrases, symbols
and ideas must be banned.
And no, I don't care for the Republicans much either.

You give me hope Mickey.

Isn't it possible they just believe its the right thing to do?

That's why I'm so happy that so many of them are
going to be replaced with Democrats who really are Democrats.
Unless the pre-vote setup Diebold machines prevent this...

What is a true Democrat?
Or a true Republican for that matter?
I seem to have lost track of the definition.

I am a liberal, and I see limits to free speech.

I didn't say that and in fact have a problem with legal limits.
Speech isn't free when we decide that the right to say certain things
but not others is decided by the speech police.
Consider the absolute arrogance of some people in shouting down a
message that other people may want to hear.
Or denying a speaker the right to appear before a crowd with an
unpopular point of view.
"Liberals" and conservatives both try to drown out opposing points of
view and sometimes they do it by denigrating the messenger rather than
shouting him or her down.
Republicans are not all bad and neither are Democrats.
But to listen to either side one would think that the Devil himself is
in charge of the opposing party.
That isn't fair to the voter and its certainly not honorable.

Given the fact that his followers are mostly family members I don't
expect that many do agree with him.
The man and his few followers are human garbage.

The message isn't defensible but the right to express it is absolute.

Of course. That's why people have to hear his crap to

I don't think Mickey would try to shut anybody down.
True liberals don't do that.

Right on, and I think that we all three agree on that.

Amen :-)
