The Myth of an al Qaeda Takeover of Iraq
"Even the U.S. government concedes that there are fewer than 2,000 al
Qaeda fighters in Iraq, and the Iraq Study Group put the figure at
only 1,300.
Indeed, foreign fighters make up a relatively small component of the
Sunni insurgency against the U.S. and British occupation forces. It
strains credulity to imagine 1,300 fighters (and foreigners at that)
dominating a country of 26 million people."

More to the point there were little to no al Qaeda fighters in Iraq
until Bush and Blair's illegal invasion and the instability that now
exists in Iraq. The invasion has done nothing but fuel terrorism. The
money spent on this illegal invasion, if spent more wisely, may well
have reduced terrorism. Hundred's of billions of dollars spent on
making the world a far less safer place.

In a sense, however, Fred may be right. Al-Qaeda is certainly going to
exploit our idiocy in so far as they are able and their influence and
encouragement may well extend beyond the bare numbers of foreign fighters.
They will probably also seek to use networks of Iraqi extended families to
establish more cells in the US and Europe. We've killed enough innocent
civilians (and civilians of dubious guilt) to motivate people to cooperate
with Al-Qaeda's goals.
Iraqis are more Westernized and sophisticated than the Afghanis and
Northwestern Pakistanis and so will have greater ease moving in the West.
We've given Al-Qaeda an opportunity to gather more capable and better
motivated recruits.

Notice the misdirection that YANG employs here: the claim that I cited
was that al Qaeda in Iraq are responsible for the greater part of the
killing. This is well documented - the al Qaeda affiliated groups are by
far the better financed and use the most sophisticated weapons and
tactics.
YANG tries to refute that by "proving" that there are less than 2000
foreign fighters, or that that number of foreigners couldn't take over a
country of 26 million people.
I didn't say that they could.
YANG is still a liar and a fraud.

Actually, most of the Sunni and ALL of the Shi'ites in Iraq are sick and
tired of the al Qaeda types.

Damn, I hate that you're making me look like a Fred Stone ditto head, but
your claim is a non sequitur. The number of insurgents does not necessarily
directly correlate to the number of attacks/deaths they are responsible for.
Even if there are only 200 AQII insurgents, they could still be responsible
for most of the killings. It's not likely, but your post does little to
refute Fredo's claim.

Well, 19 motherfuckers have caused a sharp erosion in personal liberty and
financial resources of a country of 300 million. Hardly anyone would have
believed that before 9/11, but there ya go.

While the 19 hijackers killed a lot of people, they did it in one
strike. There are 100-200 independent attacks per day in Iraq, in
different places. It is very very unlike all these attacks were done
by foreign fighters.
