LONDON (AFP) - The French have been voted the world's most unfriendly nation
by a landslide in a new British poll published. They were also voted the
most boring and most ungenerous.
A decisive 46 percent of the 6,000 people surveyed by travellers' website
Where Are You Now (WAYN) said the French were the most unfriendly nation
people on the planet, British newspapers reported.
The Germans have no to reason to celebrate the damning verdict. They came
second on all three counts.

You silly bugger, I bet you've never been there. The time I spent in
France was anything but boring, and aside from the two pricks that
wanted to rob me (neither succeeded), people were FRIENDLY. One lady
even spent half an hour teaching me to pronounce my own name correctly
(hard to learn while drunk).
On the other hand, YOU, you *****, are unfriendly, boring,
and....hmmm....you do quite generously fill this ng with crap.

has been living in Paris for 4 years. He says he can't count on the
fingers of one hand the times when people were somehow rude to him...
And as a regular traveller to Paris (I'm French-speaking though, but my
accent betrays my Qu=E9b=E9cois-origins within two seconds ), I must say
that 95% of the people there are charming, funny, more than polite and
always ready to engage in a conversation... Actually, I'm starting to
wonder if this whole "Parisians are rude" isn't simply a myth...
And, personally, I think that Parisian women are absolutely fabulous...

Stop wondering.
I'm guessing it's a rumor started by the government, like the one about
John McCain's wife being a crack *****. Anything to make Americans
feel superior.
Naturally, we repeat the phrase we hear, too stupid to investigate.
Too stupid to realize their city is more beautiful than any U. S. city,
that they work ten hours less a week than we do, that they can drink
wine at lunch without being fired for being alcoholics.

I always attempt to speak French when in France (often get put out of
my misery quite quickly) and I've always found the French to be good
humoured and welcoming. Just shouting at them in English doesn't go
down too well, but I can understand that.
Germany is just like going home.

the poll was of british tourists who probably spent most of their time in
paris. it is difficult to judge an entire nation by the experiences of
people who only go to one big cosmopolitan metropolis, where people, as a
rule, and in nearly every large city on earth, tend to be rude (think
manhattan).
you're also forgetting the fact that this poll is british, so either they
polled brits, or the pollsters were british, and there is a bit of a rivalry
between the brits and the french.
try the countryside of france, and try conversing to the locals without
expecting them to learn /your/ language and you'll find they can be very
generous and accommodating.

Just learning to say please, thank you, and excuse me was enough to get by
in France and Spain when I traveled through. The French were most helpful

I was stationed in Germany and most of the people were friendly and wanted
to speak English. The only thing they were confused about was Americans and
booze. Most Germans get happy when drunk and most GI's got mean. The hard
working farmers would take the young soldier who thought he was tough and
put him in a room until we got there. (Good thing the farm women didn't get
their hands on him.)

As a European, I find the French warm and engaging. There are, of course, rude french. But I suspect that the appriasal of the French character cited is the result of rude tourists, and I can speak with authroity on the subject of American tourists.
I love the Americans; overall, they are an incredible people, but Europe oft gets a taste of narrow, wealthy entitled tourists or worse, your president when he visits..

As one who observed tourists in Paris, I would concur. When I was in Paris,
some were warm, some had an attitude. But that's true of any place you go.
USians can be particularly rude and vicious, much more than their French
counterparts.
