May 20 - Nobody in the Middle East puts a better face on bad news than
Jordan's blue-eyed monarch and his dazzling queen, Rania. "You know,"
says King Abdullah, "we like to be optimists here." But at a meeting
of the World Economic Forum he hosted last weekend on the shores of
the Dead Sea, the mood was just about as bleak as the arid hillsides
in this, the lowest place on earth.
Yes, hundreds of dignitaries, diplomats and business executives took
up residence in a pair of spa-hotels with multiple swimming pools,
magical mud wraps and Romanian masseurs. Even Secretary of State
Colin Powell dropped in to make a few lame excuses for recent American
policy. But the delegates might as well have been wandering in the
wilderness, and everywhere they turned danger loomed on the horizon.
