In 1613 the Italian scientist Galileo published a work known as "Letters on
Sunspots." In it, he presented evidence that the earth rotates around the
sun, rather than the sun around the earth. By so doing, he set in motion a
series of events that finally brought him before the Roman Catholic
Inquisition under "vehement suspicion of heresy." Eventually, he was forced
to "recant." Why was the idea that the earth moves around the sun

Yes, he did espouse an idea that was contradictory but the church
apologized for it some 350 years later. I suspect they will be apologizing
for all the boys the priests took liberties with in about 2355 AD.

Actually, the main reason for the charge was that he called the
current Pope an idiot in print. The Copernican view was gaining
support by leaps and bounds by 1631, and some of the best astronomers
in the world worked for, wait for it, the Vatican.
