NEW YORK A Gallup report released today reveals that more than half of
all Americans, rejecting evolution theory and scientific evidence,
agree with the statement, "God created man exactly how Bible describes
it."
Another 31% says that man did evolve, but "God guided." Only 12% back
evolution and say "God had no part."
Gallup summarized it this way: "Surveys repeatedly show that a
substantial portion of Americans do not believe that the theory of
evolution best explains where life came from." They are "not so quick
to agree with the preponderance of scientific evidence."
The report was written by the director of the The Gallup Poll, Frank
Newport.
Breaking down the numbers, Gallup finds that Republican backing for
what it calls "God created human beings in present form" stands at 57%
with Democrats at 44%.
Support for this Bible view rises steadily with age: from 43% for
those 18 to 29, to 59% for those 65 and older. It declines steadily
with education, dropping from 58% for those with high school degrees
to a still-substantial 25% with postgraduate degrees.

Given the abysmal state of science education and the rampant lack of
critical accumen in the American public, I am hardly surprised. Children
are sent to public school to have any sparks of brilliance quenched and
their cerebral cortex scooped out by a runscible spoon.

Sad but true.
As private schooling is out of my budget range, and 100% homeschool isn't an
option, I am forced to rely on public schools, supplemented however with a
heavy dose of involvement and encouragement of rational thinking.
I learned long ago not to restrict my learning experience of the topic at
hand solely on the prescribed curriculum, believing that a true education on
the matter comes more from analysis from all angles with the most recent
information. I'm hope to pass that along to my children.

Please don't beat what little little brain matter I have left out of
me, but...

I'll never get another chance for a spelling lame about runcible.

CT

The spelling is "runcible" according to the Oxford Online dictionary.
I had to look it up. It's "a fork curved like a spoon, with three
broad prongs, one of which has a sharpened outer edge for cutting"
which doesn't sound like what I see in the school system.
I don't see "their cerebral cortex scooped out", rather I observe a
process of cerebral petrifation, the fossilization of cognitive
processing as they are prepared to excel on tests of rote material
requiring little or no rational thinking, just do the math, know the
science and regurgitate the desired comprehension. Oh yeah, I nearly
forgot, write homilies along mainline thinking.
Fortunately, there are plenty of independent thinkers in school today.
Unfortunately, too many of them are in trouble with authority. I am
consoled knowing that recorded history reveals the travails of great
minds as being stimulous as often as repression. This is my hope.
The challenge--read opportunity--here is for those of us who recognise
the problem to participate in breaking the stifling entrapment of
curious students.
This group is well populated with both extremes--the free range
enquirer and the single minded absolutist--plus a healthy sprinkling of
the mushy middle.
Our students need to see how an open and healthy debate on issues
(which leads to life-long problem solving skills) is preferred to a
rigorous, one way to knowledge approach (which creates unthinking
advocates). George Orwell's 1984 expressed a concern for centralized
thought which, although avoided, continues to be a danger.
I am convinced the main culprits in this battle are (1) those who would
control society because they do not trust others, not even their
supporters, to choose what is best for individuals in society and (2)
those who are afraid of open debate for fear they might find themselves
mistaken and see that as the failure society abhors instead of the
success of learning it is. If I thought about it, I am sure there are
a (3), a (4) and more.
In my work with kids (more than most, not as much as I would like) I am
struck by their curiosity and disregard for the authority of elders.
This gives me hope.
All the best, Gordon Hill

Some people will nod sagely and agree to any old ungrammatical tosh.
All surveys are rubbish, but especially this Australian beaut. It would
appear that any potential half-witted opinions the average Aussie may
have about man's place in the cosmos have been supplanted by the
practical concern of his place in the compost.
http://www.cleanup.com.au/attachments/Rubbish%20Summary(3).pdf ;"Clean
Up Australia's Rubbish Report is the only annual, nationally based
rubbish survey of its type."
This is the most honest statement about surveys I've ever read. On the
downside, there's no stats in the report explaining the kind of crap
the average ill-educated intellectually challenged nose-picking and
*****-eating lottery-playing halfwit numpty will believe. And even if
there was one, I wouldn't believe the results.

In a related bit, down here, in South Carolina, the assembly has
decided to affirm the "Evolution only" teaching in science, striking
down the folks who wanted to "Teach the controversy", and
"alternatives" to evolution. Of course, the article also states that
lawmakers were "going to try to change the curriculum thru laws."
Of course.

Never had a taste for them myself, but I had a lady friend who was
dead keen. So much so that she laid in wait for Phil after a concert,
and he allowed several photos to be taken with her clutching him in
what I considered to be unwholesome ways. Which I thought was rather
nice of him.

Well - at the first approximation, everyone is an insect, organisms
that are not renowned for mental agility.

I always thought that, at the first approximation, everyone is bacteria.

To a first approximation, everyone is dead.

Ergo to a second (third?) approximation I am dead bacteria. Which,
upon examination, appears correct.

I always liked -- and I forgot who pointed this out -- that "to a
first approximation, all (land) animals fly". There are of course
more insects than anything else, and the bulk of those are
beetles. Among vertebrates birds are the most diverse, and
even among mammals bats have the most species.
