Gannon Fire
"Mr. President, does the sight of our boys in uniform give you wood, too?"

Putsch's fear of a free press was already the stuff of legend. It
started with consigning the testy and extremely dangerous Helen Thomas
to the back of the room so the President would never have to deal with
her awkward questions. Then there was the famous "eve-of-battle" press
conference, in which Putsch let slip that he was getting the questions
out of sequence. More recently, he complained to one reporter that he
might have an answer to a question if he had seen it beforehand (the
question was if he could name any mistakes he made in his first three
years).
The "embedded journalists" - the practice of sending media whores to
ride along with the troops and faithfully passing out press releases
from the military as a type of ersatz news - was probably the brainstorm
of the Pentagon, but I'm sure the White House didn't mind it. The
press, overwhelmed by all the flag-waving and right-wing bombast,
couldn't even muster up the courage to complain that such a move
suborned their credibility.
In the past few weeks, we've seen reports of ***** journalists
receiving payola from the White House to propagandize on their behalf.
A lot of this was pretty strange, because the mainstream media, already
in the complete control of major right wing corporations such as
NewsCorp, GE, Disney, Time/Warner and the Unification Church (the
Moonies), was already a tame and flaccid thing, ever ready to smooth
over awkward moments on behalf of their corporate masters.
But the White House apparently suffers from some pretty irrational
terror, since already having the firmest grip on America's once proud
media, and having a huge corps of violent, vicious brownshirt thugs on
talk radio and on the web and on Faux News wasn't enough.
They had to plant a stooge in the White House Press corps to toss
softball questions and promote the far-right agenda.
I mean, how pathetic is that? The President of the United States is a
brittle coward who can't handle tough questions from a reporter. And
this guy is supposed to be dealing with the Chinese, the North Koreans,
and Europe for our safety?
The stooge in this case was a severe case of backwash from that loony
bin of right wing nuttiness, Free Republic.
The stooge had apparently been a regular at White House press
briefings under the name of "Jeff Gannon," a manly name that reminds
readers of large black cylindrical objects that hurl projectiles with
enormous force.
The guy's real name was the considerably less studly: James Guckert.
He supposedly wrote for an outfit calling itself "Talon Press" - which,
like Free Republic, was very much into hard, stylized eagles as logos,
and incredible hate campaigns against liberals interspersed with boo-hoo
sessions over how the liberals were taking over everything. The other
half of Talon Press was a well-heeled GOP contributor who was also part
of the Free Republic zoo, named Robert R. Eberle, Ph.D. He even used
the alphabet soup in his messages on Free Republic, which is a bit like
cleaning a sewer in an evening gown. I guess the guy just wanted to
impress somebody.
Now, a word about Free Republic. Back in June of 2001 I wrote an essay
(http://www.zeppscommentaries.com/Humor/freepers.htm) which likened the
Freepers to Hitler's Brownshirts. Such an comparison wouldn't even
cause a raised eyebrow today, but back then, it caused a certain stir,
and as a consequence, I was invited to participate in an on-air debate
on the Alan Colmes radio show with the President of Free Republic, Brian
Buckley.
Buckley, nephew of William F. Buckley, was there at Free Republic to
try and class up the joint. Gilding a turd, if you will. (He quit a
few months after this all came down). All I knew about the guy was that
he had an uncle who was a killer debater, and he had abysmal judgement
in the types of people he hung around with. So I was relieved when
Colmes' secretary called me to let me know the debate was postponed for
a week. That gave me time to bone up and make sure I knew exactly what
my strategy was going to be. Talent doesn't always descend through
generations (certain US presidents come to mind) but when it does - say,
as with Barry Bonds or Brett Hull - the results can be pretty
impressive. I assumed I would be taking on a Goliath.
Five days later I got another call. Buckley had postponed again.
Three more days, maybe? OK, I was ready. No problem.
Came the big night, the phone rang, and I was there and ready and raring.
Brian no-showed us. He simply didn't show up at all. It kinda gave me
a lasting impression of Free Republic: here's the guy who is supposed to
give the Freepers a little class, and he pulls a bush stunt like not
showing up for an on-air debate.
I like to think he decided to do some homework, read some of my essays,
and realized he was hopelessly outgunned. Of course, I also like to
think I'll win the lottery some day. I like to think lots of things.
But I learned that Free Republic was bluster resting on a deep paranoia
and insecurity, and they couldn't take the light of day.
Which takes us back to Talon Press, the President of the United States,
and the man whose name ejaculates power, Jeff Gannon, boy reporter and
chief stud.
He's a freeper under an assumed name. He applied for reporter's
credentials with Congress under his real name, and was turned down.
Maybe Congress has a quota on how many right wing nuthatches they can
let in the building at once or something.
So he applies to the White House under his nom de conneries*. Now mind
you, this comes at a time when the United States is a fretful, paranoid
and secretive place, led by a fretful, paranoid and secretive leader.
For example, I'm out in the middle of nowhere, a county with less than
ten people per square mile, and my bank no longer has deposit slips in
the foyer "for security reasons" and my insurance got jacked up because
having a computer and doing desktop publishing on it means I'm a
potential security risk. Maybe I'll hide the plans to build a nuclear
bomb on someone's business card or something. Meanwhile, Washington DC
looks like a Eastern Bloc capital city during a Russian repression, with
tanks and troopers with big guns everywhere, and cameras and metal
detectors every three steps.
So here's this guy, a star in a website filled with violent and vicious
far-right lunatics, and he's ALSO got these websites devoted to - get
this - gay military prostitution rings (militaryescortsm4m.com, rough
trade costs extra), he's under an assumed name, and he's going to be
facing a twitchy little moron of a President who has a severe case of
the twitters.
Naturally, they ushered him right in with a deep bow.
Later, Scott McClellan, the head flak for the White House, tripped all
over himself on the issue, first denying that he knew Gannon's name was
phoney, then admitting that he did know, and then saying he only had a
day pass, and when it became evident that Gannon was a regular for at
least a year, admitting that he was, well, a regular. Finally,
McClellan protested that the Press Secretary had nothing to do with
accreditation, something that might have been mildly plausible had Scott
thought to say that one first.
The press got miffed at the guy's blatant bias and lack of
professionalism. He was a notorious star-fucker, constantly dropping
names and kissing up to anyone with a Q factor above about five, which
would include some of the White House gardeners.
McClellan would go to the guy whenever he wanted a breather - not that
the puppy dog press had many hard questions for him. Or he would use
him to smear people. Take this exchange, for example from a briefing
almost exactly one year ago, on February 10th:
JEFF GANNON (Talon News): Since there have been so many questions about
what the President was doing over 30 years ago, what is it that he did
after his honorable discharge from the National Guard?
Did he make speeches alongside Jane Fonda, denouncing America's racist
war in Vietnam?
Did he testify before Congress that American troops committed war crimes
in Vietnam?
And did he throw somebody else's medals at the White House to protest a
war America was still fighting?
What was he doing after he was honorably discharged?
Not many reporters get to fire off five consecutive questions like
that. Gannon must have really had poor old Scott stumped for an answer.
Of course, not all the media was miffed. In the above example, the
reporter from ABC was ready to restore balance, asking, "And would the
White House consider those actions by Senator Kerry, that Jeff mentions
fair game in the political season?" Oh please oh please oh please oh
please oh please! Let us smear him!
What undid Gannon was that they allowed him to feed one of his weird
Freeper questions at a Presidential press conference, which is a)
televised and b) has an actual audience watching. He came up with a
real howler, just for the occasion: "[H]ow are you going to work with
people [Democratic leaders] who seem to have divorced themselves from
reality?"
Rush Limbaugh promptly started braying that at last, one of the
"liberal media elite" was listening to him and thinking about what he
had to say. However, Limbaugh wasn't the only one who noticed. So did
Jon Stewart. So did Daily Kos and Media Matters, and Air America.
They got around to wondering just who this Gannon clown was, and the
story rapidly evolved. Not only was he a freeper with gay porn websites
operating under an assumed name (and apparently under the aegis of Scott
McClellan), but he is believed to have been involved in the Valerie
Plame incident, in which someone in the admin outed her as a CIA
operative, a felonious act intended as political payback against her
husband, whose honest reports on the state of nuclear development in
Central Africa derailed the administration's propaganda drumbeat for war
in Iraq.
It got more curious. Gannon promptly resigned both as correspondent
and as the writer for Talon News, and most of the articles he wrote were
promptly scrubbed off the site. What do you suppose they were hiding?
The right wing, especially Free Republic, have been falling all over
themselves trying to protect Gannon, and more importantly, the White
House. They tried accusing Gannon's detractors of gay-bashing, and when
that didn't work, tried pointing out that nom de plumes were common
among great writers, and cited Samuel Clemens as an example.
Funny, but I don't remember Sam burning all his publications and
quitting writing when word got out that he was Mark Twain. And while
Sam managed to ***** people off, he did so with his writing skills, and
not because he was a low-class right wing *****.
What it all boils down to is this: how many more Jeff Gannons does the
White House have working for them, as they try to maintain the pretense
that they are governors of a free and independent country?
* Roughly, "name for writing *****"

CNN executive resigns after controversial remarks
Friday, February 11, 2005 Posted: 10:14 PM EST (0314 GMT)
ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- CNN chief news executive Eason Jordan resigned
Friday, saying the controversy over his remarks about the deaths of
journalists in Iraq threatened to tarnish the network he helped build.
Jordan conceded that his remarks at the January 27 World Economic Forum
were "not as clear as they should have been." Several participants at
the event said Jordan told the audience U.S. forces had deliberately
targeted journalists -- a charge he denied.
"After 23 years at CNN, I have decided to resign in an effort to prevent
CNN from being unfairly tarnished by the controversy over conflicting
accounts of my recent remarks regarding the alarming number of
journalists killed in Iraq," Jordan said in a letter to colleagues.

Putsch's fear of a free press was already the stuff of legend. It
started with consigning the testy and extremely dangerous Helen Thomas
to the back of the room so the President would never have to deal with
her awkward questions. Then there was the famous "eve-of-battle" press

might have an answer to a question if he had seen it beforehand (the
question was if he could name any mistakes he made in his first three

Now I wonder how many more 'Gannons' are at his press conferences.

A man didn’t understand how televisions work, and was convinced that
there must be lots of little men inside the box. manipulating images at
high speed. An engineer explained to him about high frequency
modulations of the electromagnetic spectrum, about transmitters and
receivers, about amplifiers and cathode ray tubes, about scan lines
moving across and down a phosphorescent screen. The man listened to the
engineer with careful attention, nodding his head at every step of the

Putsch's fear of a free press was already the stuff of legend. It
started with consigning the testy and extremely dangerous Helen
Thomas
to the back of the room so the President would never have to deal
with
her awkward questions. Then there was the famous "eve-of-battle"
press
conference, in which Putsch let slip that he was getting the
questions
out of sequence. More recently, he complained to one reporter that
he
might have an answer to a question if he had seen it beforehand (the
question was if he could name any mistakes he made in his first three
years).
Now I wonder how many more 'Gannons' are at his press conferences.
Almost all of them-based on their licking Bushs' arse for years.
Talk about preaching to the choir!
Reporter:
"Mr. President, why won't you admit that you are the worlds greatest
leader, or are you just too modest?"

"Aw, shucks. You guys ask me such tough questions."
or "Aw, shucks, you guys didn't give me any time to think
of an answer to your question before you asked it."

Just more and more evidence that he's about as sharp as a quart of

"Atheism is the world of reality, it is reason, it is freedom. Atheism is human
concern, and intellectual honesty to a degree that the religious mind cannot
begin to understand. And yet it is more than this. Atheism is not an old
religion, it is not a new and coming religion, in fact it is not, and never has
been, a religion at all. The definition of Atheism is magnificent in its
simplicity: Atheism is merely the bed-rock of sanity in a world of madness."
