They wouldn't be if the cruisers did what tourists to
Pensacola FL did several years back. It has been a
tradition ( I really have no clue exactly how long) for gay
and gay friendly people to gather at Pensacola Beach on the
weekend of Memorial Day. Pensacola; that's the home to
multiple abortion doctor murderers (most notably Paul Hill).
The conservatives of the area became increasingly vocal in
their opposition to "all them homersecksualls" on the beach
and tried to get a ban passed. Many (but by no means all)
gays visiting the area started to stamp all of the money
they spent while in the area. Opposition was thoroughly
silenced by the amount of "gay" money that circulated
through the area for months. Now Pensacola is *very*
welcoming; many establishments fly gay flags to welcome the
tens of thousands of visitors spending large amounts of cash
in their area. Their won't be much of a celebration this
year due to the damage from Ivan; but next year I am sure
every condo and hotel will be booked months in advance as
usual.

Aloha Robin --
A few years ago I tried to get just such a project rolling here in Hawaii --
I was unable to summon up enough support for this, seemingly, excellent idea.
There were timid nay-sayers who were in fear of the legal consequences of
"defacing the currency." Did this question arrive there in Florida? Did the
'phobes rumble and threaten in the courts?
To protect the currency from advertising is one thing -- if someone stamps
"BOB'S BIG BOY" on the bill pit is easy enough to find the responsible party
-- however, an anonymous imprint of 'gay money' seems impossible to prosecute
-- impossible to trace to a person responsible. Finally, if traced it would
be the pettiest of misdemeanors and all muddied over with freedom of
expression issues.
If you respond to this, please do so to my e-mail since I am a desultory
reader in these sulfurous pages
thank you

It was not that long ago you could murder a gay person in Canada and
get off scot free just by saying "but he was gay".
The world is gradually shedding its bigotry.
There are all kinds of guide books that rate foreign countries for how
friendly they are to gays. Nevis will discover a GENERAL drop in
tourism. Most of the gays who would have visited would not be so easy
to spot as that gay cruise.
Imagine being a gay travel agent -- a common profession for gays who

No, we're just well-known because we had an early and active gay

That'll explain why straight families choose San Francisco as their
first choice in destinations.

Clue. San Francisco isn't gay, you can't see the Golden Gate Bridge
from everywhere in the City, and we are one of the top tourist
destinations in the country.. for everyone.

Yes, we have a high number of gays, but it's not like it's all we
have.

down all those hills!

Back when I was a driver for SuperShuttle, I would occasionally see
people skateboarding down Jones St. a 0400.
Jones from California is on of the steepest hills in the city, a 21
degree drop between California and Pine, and not much better as you
get farther down towards Market.
So I'd be coming along, a bunch of sleepy passengers in the back, and
approaching Jones, when ZOOM! Several skateboards would fly past
going like bats out of hell.

I remember those streets. One rainy day in the late Sixties,
I was walking down one of those hills with a friend who had
these really cool moccasin boots, the ones with the heavy
cowhide soles. They got wet. I looked around, and she was
gone. There she was, speeding down the sidewalk like a skater,
trying to keep her feet under her, long blonde hair streaming
out behind her. When she got to the corner she hooked an elbow
around a street sign to keep from sliding on out into the
intersection, and circled it twice before she stopped. She
didn't say a word, just took the boots off and spent the rest of
the day barefoot.
