Object: Gene Autry a closet atheist?
I have always wondered about the author of "Here Come Santa Claus."
While the lyrics are ostensibly Christian, they could also be taken as
atheistic satire. A little research indicates that the lyrics to the
version I am referring to were written by Gene Autry.
Here comes Santa Claus,
Here comes Santa Claus,
Right down Santa Claus Lane,
Vixen and Blitzen and all his reindeer
Pullin' on the reins.
Bells are ringin', children singin',
All is merry and bright.
So hang your stockings and say your prayers,
'Cause Santa Claus comes tonight.
Peace on earth will come to all,
If we just follow the light,
So let's give thanks to the Lord above
'Cause Santa Claus comes tonight,
(Yes, you heard right, but just to be sure let's repeat that
line.)
So let's give thanks to the Lord above
'Cause Santa Claus comes tonight.
And if he doesn't???? No Lord God? Hmmmm.

No because Santa will show up at Gene's house. If he doesn't
show up at yours then that must be your fault.S
