As American criticisms of China have shifted from human rights to the
value of its currency and the aggressiveness of its trade practices,
Chinese leaders have tried hard to keep the peace while exporting ever
more.

The Chinese currency, as measured by real effective exchange rate (a JP
Morgan trade-weighed index) actually gained value during the 1999-2004
period. In contrast, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand currencies
depreciated during the same period.
Hence, America's consistent trade deficit with China reflects American
consumers' demand as well as the strength of American economy. The
problem is this. American economy, at present, is debt driven and it is
not sustainable. Consumer demands could and would inevitable collapse
in the near future. What then?
One question is whether demands from China and/or other economies can
take up the slack. The other question is when the demands for raw
materials will finally slow down the growing global economy.
