Object: George Sure Knows How to Woo Black Voters, Doesn't he?
Given the religious values and church attendance of black voters, you'd
think Ayatollah Bush would be desperate to woo them, but after snubbing
the NAACP, he went on to get only 11% of the black vote.
Now, just two weeks after Bush made the point that "Sometimes, words
have consequences..."
he's telling them "that his plan to add private accounts to Social
Security would benefit blacks since they tend to have shorter lives
than some other Americans and end up paying in more than they get
out.":

If you can't see what's wrong with the way he expresses himself, I'm

couldn't get black voters, so he blew them off. Instead, he
shamelessly played to religion and fear. That was what did it. Dubya

Big Black Lies
Krugman is warped on the matter of Social Security reform and African
Americans.
Look up the word “vile” in the dictionary and you will find an
appropriate description of Paul Krugman’s New York Times column from
last Friday.
In the column, America’s most dangerous liberal pundit throws a gutter
accusation of “bigotry” at President Bush — yes, the man who just
appointed his female African American national security advisor as the
successor to his African American secretary of State.
Why, in Krugman’s mind, is Bush a bigot? Because the president is
seeking to reform Social Security with personal accounts — which, by the
way, is the same reform being argued for by Harold Ford, the African
American Democratic congressman from Tennessee. In Ford’s words, the
existing system “provides a measure of security for retirees, but it
cannot be passed on to provide financial security for their children and
grandchildren. The key to retirement security and upward social mobility
is wealth creation.”
How does wanting the same thing that Rep. Ford wants make President Bush
a bigot? Be patient — you’ll see.
Krugman quotes Bush saying that “African-American males die sooner than
other males do, which means the system is inherently unfair to a certain
group of people.” Krugman says Bush made this statement “[t]his week, in
a closed meeting with African-Americans.” Krugman is wrong: Bush made
this statement on January 11 in an open meeting with Americans of all
races. And Bush is right — according to the National Center for Health
Statistics, at age 65 the median African American male lives 14.6 more
years, compared with 16.6 more years for whites. That means African
Americans have 2 fewer years to collect their Social Security benefits
than whites do, even though they pay the same amount of taxes during
their working lives.
Personal accounts will make Social Security more fair for African
Americans because, at death, the value in those accounts will be allowed
to be passed on to loved ones not just plowed back into the system, as
is the case today. But Krugman says Bush is bigoted for wanting to
redress that injustice. In Krugman’s mind, Bush is treating “premature
black deaths not as a tragedy we must end but as just another way to
push [his] ideological agenda....

No newspapers at all. Any site dealing with demographics or actuarial
tables will confirm that blacks have a lower life expectancy than
whites.
Krugman, and a number of other apologists for the currect SocSec system,
go to great lengths to "prove" that because blacks are also poorer than
whites and therefore likely to contribute less to Social Security that
that "compensates" for their lower life expectancy.

Krugman does not deny this. He says that once a black person reaches 65,
that person will enjoy the benefits for an average of about 14 years,
while a white person will do for about 16 years. That's not as big a
difference.

Krugman, and a number of other apologists for the currect SocSec system,
go to great lengths to "prove" that because blacks are also poorer than
whites and therefore likely to contribute less to Social Security that
that "compensates" for their lower life expectancy.

Logically, black people would also contribute less in any other sort of
system.
The whole debate seems more about ideology than numbers.

Krugman is not a credible editorialist. Come back when you have
something factual from a source that isn't more full of ***** that
Teddy Kennedy.

LOL! That was a quick execution. I'll stick with his analysis until
you provide me a credible rebuttal from a reputable source, thanks.

LOL yourself. Your failure to proved *credible* citations noted.

What would a "credible" source be, for you? Which newspaper?

No newspapers at all. Any site dealing with demographics or actuarial
tables will confirm that blacks have a lower life expectancy than
whites.

Krugman does not deny this. He says that once a black person reaches
65, that person will enjoy the benefits for an average of about 14
years, while a white person will do for about 16 years. That's not as
big a difference.

Of course he doesn't deny it, he's not *THAT* delusional. He spins it to
make it sound like being poor compensates for having a shorter life
expectancy.

Heinlein was right on. I'm reading a good book now. (Well, one of
several that I've started.) It's "America 2014: An Orwellian Tale." by
Dawn Blair. It's a take off on "1984" set in America ten years from now.
Here is the publisher's description:
---
FROM THE PUBLISHER
Picture a totalitarian United States just ten years from now: With no
end in sight to the War on Terror, a fourth-term President George Blush
rules without restraint. The Constitution has been replaced with a
"Patriotic Citizens Bill of Rights and Responsibilities" and America has
been renamed "Gods United States." The Blush Administration has finally
"freed" America of its "treasonous" opposition party, "subversive" media
and "obstructionist" judges.
In this starkly terrifying political thriller, Winston Smith is a young,
successful producer of patriotic commercials for the Department of
Homeland Security. While working to fulfill his dream of making a
contemporary film version of 1984, he runs afoul of government censors,
is forced to stand trial in a nightmarish courtroom, and faces brutal
execution in a privatized prison. Rescued by a mysterious, powerful
young woman and a band of teenaged computer hackers, he joins the
Resistance and becomes swept up in a deadly struggle to undermine his
governments stranglehold on power and information.
As it conjures up a frightening--and highly controversial--vision of the
future, Dawn Blair's gripping novel of American dystopia lays bare the
most incendiary political issues of the present day.

Read Heinlein's "If This Goes On..." again. I'm starting to
think that these guys have been using this novelette for no
purpose that Heinlein ever meant it for. They are using
psychology and advertising exactly as Heinlein said they
would. I'm glad he didn't live to see this.

Don't sugar-coat it like that Micky - tell us how you really feel....
(Is that the book title in your Heinlein ref.? I'll have a look at
that. Never been a big Heinlein fan. More into Greg Bear, John Varley

You are too young then. Back in the '60s all we had were Heinlein,
Bradbury, Asimov, Clark, LeGuin...
I now read, when I can, Bear, Brin, Benford, Bova and Pratchet.

I notice Bush was quietly grooming Jeb when he picked him for their
trip after the the Tsunami. Only Dubya would think of such a thing at
a time like that.
What do you say we see Jeb and a Bush family cronie pitched against
Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama in '08?

Jebby and Cheney?

concern, and intellectual honesty to a degree that the religious mind cannot

been, a religion at all. The definition of Atheism is magnificent in its
simplicity: Atheism is merely the bed-rock of sanity in a world of madness."

Jebby and Cheney?

I doubt Cheney is up for it, but I wonder if Bill Frist might have a
go, with Jeb as his VP, setting Jeb up for a run later.
I think I'm going to have to withdraw Hilary from the running. After
her fainting spell the other day, you *know* the Republicans are going
to find some back-door to turn that into a liability. With as many
registered sheep voting as we had this last time, such an undercurrent
of character-staining isn't going to go well for her.
On the other hand, it's four years until the election and two years
until they start fighting for a place on the ballot. Maybe it will be
too far back in history by then for the Republicans to succeed in
making mileage out of it?
