Giddy-up Gideon in Hotel rooms |
For some time now, when I check into a hotel room, I find the bible and
put it out on the floor outside the room -- something akin to leaving
the dirty dishes on the floor after room service.
I wonder how any of you handle this situation? Perhaps nailing it to the
wall and encircling it with what looks like demonic symbols would be
more in line with what "they" expect. :)

I just leave it in the drawer. Why go out of your way to do anything to it
at all?

I agree. What's wrong with merely ignoring it?

Being an atheist isn’t a choice or act of will — like theism; it’s a
consequence of what one knows and how one reasons.

Well, it *is* an opportunity to do a little "reverse proselytizing."
Since it is unlikely that there will ever be any organized effort to get
humanist tracts into hotel rooms, it seems reasonable to do a little
something as individuals to help promote rationality.

Maybe at least, steal it and throw it out. After all, (last time I
looked it had a stamp saying to take it) That way, they have to pay

"They" being the Gideons and not the hotel. According to the website for Gideons
International (www.gideonsinternational.org), they distribute about 63 million
Scriptures every year, or about 120 per minute. Wow, just think of all the poor
people in need of food, clothing and shelter they could be helping with that
kind of money.

Don't they solicit contributions from the hotel in proportion to the
number of "free" bibles they give them?

Not that I'm aware of. I've asked people who worked in hotel management, and the
arrangement seems to be, "We will provide the Bibles if you put them in the rooms." I
have little doubt that there are hotel chains who provide contributions, but it
doesn't seem to be a "pay up or you get nothing" proposition.

Buy a porno mag, or several and carefully cut out the provocative pictures
and leave them between the pages, especially the pages where your fave
passages are located, and use a yellow highlighter on those passages to draw
attention to them, so someone can masturbate while reading the best
pasasages in the Bible looking at on-topic "dirty" pictures.

This has inspired me to create an "ex-theist" website, based on the ex-gay model.
If anyone has some decent sites I could steal ideas from -- ie, a bit better than
some nutter who learned HTML out of The Idiot's Guide to Web Pages -- I would be
most appreciative. I would like to have something up by Christmas.

Cool! Where does one acquire such tracts? Does Jack Chick have an
alter-ego that publishes humanist tracts?
He's written them himself. Not Jack Chick style, it's more of a quarter page folded
in half kind of thing. I'll see if I can track one down and post the contents.

For some time now, when I check into a hotel room, I find the bible and
put it out on the floor outside the room -- something akin to leaving the
dirty dishes on the floor after room service.
I wonder how any of you handle this situation? Perhaps nailing it to the
wall and encircling it with what looks like demonic symbols would be more
in line with what "they" expect. :)
I just leave it in the drawer. Why go out of your way to do anything to it
at all?
Highlight the naughtier passages in the Song of Solomon.

With sticky notes pointing to the more salacious passages. Maybe even some
"stains."
Or worse, find the passages that describe genocide, execution and other nasty
bits and do the same. THAT will leave future guests wondering!

I was in a hotel in Seattle last week. I spent about an hour writing
comments in the Gideon Bible. They ranged from witty remarks like
"*****" to deeper comments like "HAHHAHHAAAAA!." I think this will
be my hotel room policy from now on.
